Game Recap

Reggie Miller hit a three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in regulation, then scored five of his 19 points in overtime as the Indiana Pacers edged the Atlanta Hawks, 105-102.

The Pacers, who staved off elimination in their quest for the Eastern Conference and Central Division titles, trailed 94-88 with 10 seconds to go in regulation. But Mark Jackson sank a tough three-pointer from the right corner and Atlanta turned it over on the inbounds pass.

After a timeout, Indiana's inbounds pass got away from Austin Croshere. Miller, using Croshere as a pick, picked up the ball and sank a wild, running three-pointer to force overtime.

Atlanta's Mookie Blaylock missed a potential game-winning basket at the end of regulation and Miller opened the extra period with another three-pointer. After the Hawks drew within 103-102 with 77 seconds to go, Miller made two free throws with 25 seconds left to seal it.

"It wasn't necessarily a broken play," said Miller of his heroics at the end of regulation. "It was kind of a scramble and Croshere was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Being a rookie he didn't know where to go and I had to help him out."

Chris Mullin made five three-pointers in the first quarter and scored 19 points and Antonio Davis also had 19 for the Pacers, who have won six of their last eight games. Indiana moved one game ahead of the Miami Heat for the second-best record in the East.

At least for now, the Pacers still have a chance at the Central Division and Eastern Conference titles. But if Chicago, which lost at Cleveland tonight, wins once more or Indiana loses, the Bulls would clinch both titles.

"We made the plays and the guys were finding ways to win," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "The key was that guys made big plays down the stretch. ... That was a good win for us. In the second half and overtime the guys gave me all they could."

"It was a great win," said Jackson, who finished with 14 points and 12 assists. "We made plays when we had to. We made big shots and didn't quit. We showed lots of character at the end."

Dikembe Mutombo scored 20 points and pulled down a season-high 24 rebounds for the Hawks, who fell two games behind Charlotte for the fourth seed in the East and homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"It is our fault, we were hard at work and then to lose a ballgame like this...," said Mutombo. "Everything we did out there went to water. You can't get credit. Credit comes when you win the game."

The loss was just the third in 12 home games for Atlanta.

Indiana looked like it would run away with this contest early as Mullin torched the Hawks from behind the arc. The Pacers used a 17-6 run to open a 30-19 lead at the end of one quarter. Indiana pushed the lead to 35-21 with 9:29 left in the opening half, but Atlanta used a 31-11 burst to take a six-point lead just before halftime.

Eldridge Recasner had eight points of his 16 in that run for the Hawks, who held Miller scoreless over the first 22 minutes of the contest.

Atlanta led 86-77 with 5:13 left in regulation following a dunk by Chucky Brown. But the Pacers closed the quarter with a 17-8 run to force overtime.

Blaylock finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Hawks, who used just eight players but saw each score in double figures.
