Game Recap

Brevin Knight scored a career-high 22 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated Chicago, 91-85, snapping the Bulls' 13-game winning streak and preventing them from clinching their third straight Eastern Conference title.

The Bulls still could have sealed the East race, but Indiana outlasted Atlanta in overtime, 105-102.

The Cavaliers posted their third straight home victory over Chicago and closed within one win of securing a playoff spot. Cleveland, which holds the sixth spot in the East, moved five games ahead of ninth-place Orlando with five games remaining.

"This was fun," said Knight. "This was a packed house and the energy level was high. This was just one of our better all-around games. When you play the best team in the league, it creates a lot of adrenaline."

The loss dealt a blow to Chicago's bid to clinch the NBA's top record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. The Bulls lead over Utah dropped to just one-half game as the teams are tied with 18 losses apiece. Utah owns the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series from Chicago.

"They just out-scrummed us for the ball tonight," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "They were able to rip it out of our arms, tear it out of our hands and take the ball away."

The Bulls, who need one victory for their third straight 60-win season, suffered their first defeat since losing at Dallas in overtime on March 12th. The loss also snapped Chicago's seven-game road winning streak as the Bulls fell to 3-9 in their last 12 visits to Cleveland.

Michael Jordan scored 29 points for the Bulls, but scored 18 of his points in the first quarter. Jordan was only 2-of-11 from the field over the final three quarters.

"The Cavs put some real good defense on him," said Jackson. "They double-teamed and they threw everybody at him. He had some tough shots and he didn't have many open looks after that first quarter."

The Bulls played the final 20 minutes without guard Ron Harper, who limped off with a sprained ankle with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Chicago never led after Shawn Kemp, who had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, hit a technical free throw with 6:38 left in the third quarter to put Cleveland ahead, 56-55. That foul shot sparked a 12-5 run that gave the Cavaliers a 68-60 lead entering the final period.

"We never really took care of the basketball like we should have," said Jordan. "Turnovers were the difference in the ballgame. Offensively, we didn't get into sync after the first quarter. The Cavaliers played a good enough game to beat us."

Cleveland stretched its advantage to 79-66 on Wesley Person's three-pointer with 7:30 to play in the final period.

The Bulls closed within 87-83 on a three-pointer by Steve Kerr with 1:25 remaining, but Derek Anderson and Kemp each hit foul shots to give Cleveland an 89-83 edge with 27 seconds to go.

Jordan's two foul shots pulled Chigago with 89-85 with 22 seconds, before Knight clinched the win with a pair from the line two seconds later.

"That was a big night for us, getting the win," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "We needed it, especially coming off a tough loss at Indiana. The way Mike Jordan started off the game, I didn't know how many he was going to end up scoring in the game. He was magnificent, but we kind of hung in there and hung around."

Scottie Pippen added 17 points for the Bulls, who shot just 42 percent (33-of-79) from the field. Person scored 12 points for Cleveland, which has won seven of its last games. The Cavaliers shot 51 percent (35-of-69).

"Obviously losing Ron Harper was key," said Fratello. "I thought Kemp got every big rebound down the stretch. At halftime, we talked about a couple things and we wanted to adjust defensively against Jordan. Jordan doesn't need any help, he's good enough as it is."

Dennis Rodman scored only six points for the Bulls but grabbed 20 rebounds for the second consecutive game.
