Game Recap

Reserve Eldridge Recasner scored a career-high 23 points and hit consecutive three-pointers during a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Charlotte Hornets, 99-87, in a possible first-round playoff preview.

Steve Smith added 23 points while helping to hold Charlotte leading scorer Glen Rice to 17 on 3-of-10 shooting. Mookie Blaylock contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Hawks, who are the only team that the Hornets have not beaten this season.

Blaylock scored 13 points in the final quarter. He and Recasner each hit four three-pointers as the Hawks sank 10-of-20 shots from behind the arc and 49 percent (34-of-70) overall.

"I came out slow and felt I was not ready to play in the first half," Blaylock said. "In times like these, you're glad you have a bench. Eldridge stepped up big for us. However, in the second half, I was definitelly ready to play."

Recasner scored eight points in the final quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers that highlighted an 11-0 burst and gave Atlanta an 81-77 edge with 8:45 to play.

The Hawks closed within a game of the fourth-place Hornets in the Eastern Conference standings with five games remaining. The fourth-place team gets homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Matt Geiger netted 17 points and Bobby Phills added 16 for Charlotte, which fell to 0-3 against the Hawks. Seattle is the only team to defeat every other club this season.

Trailing 70-67 after three quarters, the Hornets grabbed their only lead of the fourth when Vlade Divac followed teammate Anthony Mason's lay-in with a short hook shot with 10:24 left.

But Blaylock answered with a three-pointer and intercepted a bad pass by Mason, leading to Recasner's first three-pointer. Mason missed a jumper and Recasner struck again from deep before Blaylock closed the burst with a driviing layup.

David Wesley capped a 6-0 surge with a pair of free throws that cut the deficit to 86-81, but Blaylock answered with a three-pointer to end the threat with 5:13 to go. The Hornets were unable to creep closer to seven in dropping their fourth straight game.

Dikembe Mutombo collected 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Christian Laettner added 10 points and nine boards for Atlanta, which trailed by as many as 18 points in the first quarter.

Wesley and Divac netted 11 points apiece and Mason chipped in with nine and 11 rebounds. Rice totaled nine boards as the Hornets held a 43-38 rebounding edge but shot a sub-par 39 percent (29-of-76) from the field.

"I think we just didn't stand up. They came hard and we didn't meet it with aggression," Rice said. "We started out well. We definitely let this one slip by."

Charlotte burst out to the early lead and built an 11-0 cushion on Geiger's 14-footer with 9:14 left in the opening quarter. Tyrone Corbin broke the ice for the Hawks 26 seconds later, but the Hornets carved a 22-4 advantage on Geiger's dunk.

"You can't try to get it all back at once," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "If you do, you hurry, and when you hurry, you don't execute and you get no rhythm. We had to get it back one basket at a time."

The Hawks fell behind 31-16 after one quarter but used a 20-8 burst to close within 43-40 on Smith's jumper with 3:39 left in the half.
