Game Recap

Hakeem Olajuwon collected 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Clyde Drexler scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half as the Houston Rockets posted their eighth straight victory over the Sacramento Kings, 97-85.

Trailing 53-52 early in the third quarter, Houston went ahead for good when Clyde Drexler sparked a 14-2 burst with a driving layup. Drexler, who added 10 rebounds in his final trip to Sacramento, scored eight points in the run.

"I like our lineup now," Drexler said. "It would be nice to keep that lineup healthy and see how far we could go in the playoffs."

That may prove impossible, however, as forward Charles Barkley is hurting. Barkley finished with seven points and 11 rebounds but played just 20 minutes due to a groin injury.

"It was sore going into the game," said Barkley. "I know I'm going to have to have hernia surgery whenever the season's over. I'm hoping they can just get it workable so I can play."

Corliss Williamson netted 20 points and Anthony Johnson chipped in with 19 for the Kings, who got as close as two points several times in the final quarter but were unable to pull even.

Sacramento has lost three straight and 15 of its last 16 games. The Kings four remaining games are unlikely to be much different if All-Star guard Mitch Richmond does not return. Richmond has missed the last four games with a sore right knee.

Billy Owens, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, gave the Kings a 53-52 edge with 8:22 left in the third quarter before the Rockets took over, scoring 14 of the next 16 points. Mario Elie's layup with 3:14 to go gave Houston a 66-55 advantage.

Elie had 12 points and Kevin Willis contributed 11 and seven rebounds for the Rockets, who shot 48 percent (37-of-77) from the field and held a 47-43 rebounding edge. Houston downed its third straight sub-par team.

"We are doing what we are supposed to do," Olajuwon said. "We are trying to stay healthy and go on into the playoffs on a winning note. It's good to know that at least we are beating the teams we are supposed to beat."

Sacramento's Lawrence Funderburke alley-oop dunk from Johnson cut the deficit to 72-70 with 9:44 to go in the third quarter but Elie hit a technical free throw after an illegal defense.

Williamson cut it to 77-75 with a jumper with 7:19 left before Eddie Johnson got hot, scoring six straight points for Houston to widen the gap to 83-78. The Kings hung around and trailed 87-82 before Willis hit a foul shot and Drexler drained 5-of-6 from the line to secure the victory.

"They built themselves a 6-to-8 point lead and we could never really recover from that," said Anthony Johnson. "We were able to cut it down to two, but then Eddie Johnson made a couple of shots and Hakeem made a couple of buckets and then they kept the lead for good."

Tariq Abdul-Wahad had 10 points on just 3-of-10 shooting while subbing for Richmond as Sacramento shot 39 percent (33-of-85) and committed 18 turnovers.

Olajuwon scored nine points in the first quarter as the Rockets grabbed a 24-20 lead but the Kings fought back and took a 47-46 edge at the break.
