Game Recap

Jaren Jackson hit three three-pointers in the fourth quarter en route to a career-high 31 points as the San Antonio Spurs posted a pivotal victory without David Robinson, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics, 99-84.

With Robinson out with a concussion and twisted knee suffered when he was elbowed by former Dream Team teammate Karl Malone on Wednesday, Jackson dominated the fourth quarter.

The SuperSonics were within 76-72 following a jumper by Gary Payton with 8:24 to go. Jackson took over from there, sparking a 10-1 run with a 20-foot jumper. He added a three-pointer with just over seven minutes left to push the lead to 81-72 and Tim Duncan followed with a 12-footer.

After a free throw by Vin Baker pulled Seattle within 10 points with 6:07 to play, Jackson buried another three-pointer and the Sonics never got closer than 11 thereafter.

"J.J. kept getting the ball from Vinny (Del Negro) and he got in a rhythm," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "We knew everyone had to step up with David out."

Jackson finished 11-of-17 from the field and Duncan scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Will Perdue chipped in with 16 boards in Robinson's absence.

"Tim and Will did everything tonight," Popovich added. "Will did a great job on Baker tonight. He may not match up with the same physical tools, but he used his body and his smarts."

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to Seattle and kept the Spurs one-half game ahead of Phoenix for the fourth playoff spot in the Western Conference. It was also just the third win for San Antonio in 14 games games against the top five teams in the conference.

Gary Payton scored 20 points and Baker and Detlef Schrempf added 16 apiece for the Sonics, who fell 1 1/2 games behind Utah for the top seed in the Western Conference. Seattle did remain 1 1/2 games ahead of the Lakers for the Pacific Division lead.

The Spurs made 12-of-18 shots in the fourth quarter and Vinny Del Negro had seven of his nine assists in the period.

Schrempf had nine points and Payton eight as the Sonics built a 51-46 advantage at the break.
