Game Recap

Michael Jordan outscored the Orlando Magic in the first quarter and finished with 37 points as the Chicago Bulls clinched their third straight Central Division crown and grabbed the NBA's best record with an 87-78 victory.

Jordan netted 18 in the decisive opening quarter as the Bulls built a 29-13 cushion after 12 minutes and hardly looked back against the worst offensive team in the Eastern Conference.

Scottie Pippen added 13 points and Jud Buechler nine for Chicago (60-18), which holds a one-game lead over the Utah Jazz (59-19) with four to play for the league's best record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

"We accomplished another step, but we all know the ultimate goal is for the championship," said Jordan, who had two assists, giving him 5,000 for his career.

"I should have had 10,000," he said. "I want people to think I can pass the ball. It is a great accomplishment that I am proud of."

Nick Anderson scored 21 points and Derek Strong added 14 and 13 rebounds for the Magic, who average just 89.9 points per game. Horace Grant added 12 points and six rebounds against his former team.

Orlando has dropped its last four on the road and is three games behind the Nets for the final playoff spot in the East, one loss away from elimination.

"With all of the injuries that we've had this season, I can look at this team and say that we have fought like hell," said Anderson. "No one has hung their head. As coach says, 'The next man just need to be ready.' That says a lot about each and every individual here."

Dennis Rodman picked up his second technical foul and was ejected with 5:04 remaining in the contest after pulling down 10 boards for Chicago, which has won nine in a row at home to improve to 36-3 at the United Center. The Bulls have won 14 of their last 15 games.

"It was a good victory for us," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson. "We were fortunate to have Utah lose. It was a big game for us to win at this time."

Jordan was hot from the start in reaching the 30-point plateau for the fourth time in five games. He opened the game with a jumper and scored 10 points as the Bulls carved a 16-6 advantage.

Orlando's Mark Price sank a jumper to cut the deficit to 8-4 before Chicago scored eight of the next 10 points. Jordan and Price traded jumpers before Jordan answered with another bucket and a lay-in. Bill Wennington's jump shot gave the Bulls their 10-point advantage with 5:37 left in the first quarter.

Orlando, which shot 29 percent in the opening quarter, cut it to 36-29 with 2:12 to go in the first half on David Benoit's lay-in. But Steve Kerr and Buechler nailed three-pointers and, after two free throws by Strong, Dickey Simpkins had a tip-in to give Chicago a 45-31 halftime edge.

Those were the only points of the game for both Kerr and Simpkins as the Bulls got only a minor contribution from their bench. Wennington totaled eight points and Harper seven and five rebounds as Chicago shot 46 percent (37-of-80) from the floor and committed just nine turnovers.

The Bulls built their lead as high as 19 points three times in the third quarter, the last when Wennington's 17-footer made it 66-47 with 4:43 left.

Orlando narrowed the gap to 78-69 with 5:04 to go in the final quarter when Grant's free throw capped a 7-0 spurt. But Scott Burrell had a steal and a layup and Jordan had a lay-in to end that threat.

"I thought we had them put away. I think we got a little too relaxed, but they didn't quit" Jordan admitted. "They kept coming at us, and the next thing you know, it's a 10-point ballgame. Dennis gets the technical and then it is a nine-point game. Phil tells me to take my top off. I was pretty comfortable over there (on the bench). Then we got down to business."

Strong's 17-footer made it 85-78 with 38 seconds left, but Jordan nailed a short jumper and Orlando's Gerald Wilkins missed from beyond the arc.

Kevin Ollie netted 10 points and Price chipped in with nine for the Magic, who held a 45-35 rebounding edge but committed 19 turnovers that were turned into 22 points by Chicago.
