Game Recap

Shawn Bradley scored 10 of his 18 points in the decisive second-quarter run as the Dallas Mavericks snapped a five-game losing streak with a 99-81 victory over the Denver Nuggets in a matchup of teams that have combined for just 30 wins.

Bradley grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Erick Strickland added 16 points and Michael Finley contributed 15 and seven assists for Dallas, which improved to 20-59 overall.

"I am very happy about tonight," Bradley said. "We have to go in and get a good summer workout and improve our game. I am very optimistic about next year. The main thing is consistency and that is what I strive for."

Danny Fortson had 16 points and eight boards as the Nuggets' league-worst record dropped to 10-68. Denver must win three of its final four games to avoid becoming just the fourth team in NBA history to lose 70 games in one season. Coincidentally, the last team to do so was the Mavericks, who finished 11-71 in the 1992-93 season.

Dallas snapped a three-game road losing streak and actually has compiled a respectable 10-13 record over its last 23 games. But the Mavericks still own the league's sixth-worst record.

"The main thing is to come back next season and make this team better as a whole," Finley said. "This is a learning process and we need to look at the games that we have won and remember how we won those games and hopefully that will carry over to next season."

"They are finishing the season pretty strong," said Nuggets forward Tony Battie, who scored 10 points. "They've played some good basketball down the stretch."

Denver officially avoided matching the worst record in league history with a 128-103 victory over Sacramento on Thursday. The league's worst season still belongs to the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who went 9-73. The only other team to post a 70-loss season was the 1986-87 Los Angeles Clippers, who compiled a 12-70 mark.

The Mavs trailed 24-23 after one quarter but opened the second period with a 22-7 burst. Bradley sparked the spurt with two free throws that gave Dallas the lead for good and, after blocking a layup attempt by LaPhonso Ellis, added a follow slam to make it 27-24.

Bradley hit a tip-in before blocking a layup by Bryant Stith, leading to Shawn Respert's three-pointer that capped the run for a 45-31 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left. Dallas led 51-42 at the half and was ahead by at least seven points throughout the second half.

"FinallY, we did what we were supposed to do, beat a team that we were supposed to beat," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I thought we had the game in hand most of the time."

Khalid Reeves chipped in 13 points and A.C. Green had 11 and 13 rebounds for Dallas, which shot 48 percent (40-of-84) from the field.

Anthony Goldwire and Johnny Newman each scored 15 points and Ellis pulled down 13 boards for Denver, which lost three out of four games to Dallas this season. The Nuggets have dropped nine of 11 overall and four in a row on the road.

Denver made just 38 percent (31-of-81) from the floor, including a 2-of-13 performance from three-point range.

"We just didn't make enough shots, they do a good job," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "When they get the lead on you, they can play real small and put a lot of pressure on you because it is hard to cover anybody."

Ellis and Cory Alexander, who combined for 49 points in Thursday's triumph over Sacramento, shot 5-of-22 for just 14 points.
