Game Recap

Shaquille O'Neal scored 35 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 96-84 victory over the Golden State Warriors before the largest crowd this season at Oakland Arena.

Eddie Jones added 14 points and Mario Bennett had 12 for the Lakers, who never trailed and won for the seventh time in eight games. Los Angeles climbed within one game of Seattle for the Pacific Division lead and is only two behind Utah for the best record in the Western Conference.

Jim Jackson scored 23 points for the Warriors, who had 19,821 fans come out to see them suffer their fourth straight loss and 15th in the last 17 games. Golden State also has dropped five straight and 10 of 11 at home.

"Our guys bounced back after a disappointing loss last night (to Phoenix)," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "We played a solid game and we only had a couple of spots where we lost our focus."

Los Angeles blew the game open with a 17-0 first-quarter burst. After a three-pointer by Rick Fox gave the Lakers a 10-6 lead with 7:08 left in the period, Bennett and Jones converted three-point players around a free throw by O'Neal to extend the lead to 17-6 with 5:51 remaining in the quarter.

O'Neal followed with a six-footer, and after a layup by Bennett, O'Neal dunked and hit one of two from the line to cap the run and give Los Angeles a 24-6 bulge at the 4:22 mark.

The Lakers' lead was 32-14 after one and they quickly extended it to 38-18 on Fox's layup with 9:11 left in the second. The lead was still 20 late in the period before Los Angeles settled for a 58-39 halftime lead.

"We spotted them 18 in the first quarter and then we had to play catch-up," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "They just dominated us early. They were aggressive and pounded us on the boards. We got outrebounded badly on the boards right from the beginning. From that point on we finally got some people in that were competing."

Golden State began to chip away late in the third. Trailing 68-56 with 5:10 remaining in the period, Tony Delk scored four points in an 8-1 run as the Warriors closed within 69-64 on Delk's jumper with 3:07 to go. But Los Angeles built the lead back to 11 points entering the fourth.

Clarence Weatherspoon sank a pair of free throws to cap a quick 6-0 spurt and cut the deficit to 87-79 with 4:38 remaining in the final quarter. But O'Neal answered with a layup and Jones buried a three-pointer to rebuild a double-digit lead at 92-79 with 3:05 to play.

"The run in the second half has been something that we have had to deal with all year long," O'Neal said. "We handled their run and we were able to hold onto the victory."

Fox finished with 11 points and Kobe Bryant added 10 for the Lakers, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77) from the field and outrebounded the Warriors, 47-37. At 57-21, Los Angeles has its best record since going 58-24 in the 1990-91 campaign.

Delk scored 16 points and Jason Caffey had 15 for the Warriors, who shot 42 percent (30-of-72) and have dropped 10 of their last 11 meetings with the Lakers. Golden State (16-62) must win its final five games to reach 20 victories or it will post the team's worst record since a 17-63 mark in 1964-65.
