Game Recap

Kevin Garnett had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to their fifth straight win, 107-88 over the hapless Los Angeles Clippers.

Los Angeles was within 82-79 with just over 10 minutes to play when Minnesota took control with a 14-5 run. Garnett scored seven points during the burst, including a foul shot that capped it for a 96-84 cushion with 5:08 to go.

"We expected this to be one helluva fight. That was an aggressive game," Garnett said. "We're not that good that we can look past teams and tonight was one of those games."

Anthony Peeler contributed 21 points and seven assists and Stephon Marbury added 14 and eight for the Timberwolves, who swept the season series from the Clippers for the first time. Minnesota, which has won eight of 10 overall, moved within 1 1/2 games of sixth-place Portland in the Western Conference.

Lamond Murray collected 23 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for Los Angeles, which has lost eight straight games and 21 in a row against teams with winning records.

The Clippers (16-63), who have dropped six of seven at home, must win two of their three remaining games to avoid matching the second-worst record in team history of 17-65, set on three occasions.

"I hope the last three games we give it a good effort. I'd hate to finish on a bad note," Clippers guard Darrick Martin said. "That's not what this league is about, you have to respect the game and play hard."

Minnesota, which has already locked up its second straight postseason berth, scored 24 points off 19 Clipper turnovers. Los Angeles managed just 11 points off eight giveaways by the Timberwolves.

"They showed a lot of guts. They played with a lot of enthusiasm and they really moved the basketball well," coach Flip Saunders said of his Timberwolves. "We haven't been turning the basketball over lately, and that has been giving us a chance to win games."

With the game knotted at 39-39 midway through the second quarter, Minnesota reeled off three straight baskets to take the lead for good. Cherokee Parks hit a tip-in before Peeler fed Sam Mitchell and Garnett for inside buckets, giving the Timberwolves a 45-39 edge. Mitchell scored half of his 14 points in the second quarter, helping Minnesota to a 57-49 halftime lead.

A three-point play by Murray pulled Los Angeles within 61-59 with 7:53 remaining, but the Timberwolves used an 11-2 run later in the period to regain command. Peeler capped that spurt by going coast-to-coast for a layup, creating a 76-65 cushion.

A jumper by Charles Smith had the Clippers within 96-86 with 2:51 to go, but Los Angeles failed to score again.

"We did not hit the perimeter shots and the turnovers killed us," Clippers coach Bill Fitch concluded.

Terry Porter chipped in with 13 points off the bench and Parks added 10 for Minnesota, which shot 52 percent (44-of-84) from the field while limiting the Clippers to 42 percent (35-of-83).

"We seem to be jelling at the right time," Porter said. "Everyone on the bench has been productive, and when we get everybody back, it will only make us stronger for the playoffs."

Minnesota was without center Stanley Roberts, forward Tom Hammonds and guard Micheal Williams, all of whom sat out with various injuries. The Timberwolves are also missing starting forward Tom Gugliotta, who is out for the season with an ankle injury.

Rodney Rogers scored 18 points and Lorenzen Wright added 10 and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, which played its fourth straight game without injured starting center Isaac Austin.
