Game Recap

Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose scored 22 points apiece to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 114-105 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who suffered just their ninth home loss in the last three seasons.

Antonio Davis added 17 points for the Pacers, who won for just the second time in their last nine trips to Chicago and split the season series with the two-time defending champions. Indiana increased its lead over Miami to one game for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Scottie Pippen scored 28 points and Michael Jordan added 27 for Chicago, which had a 10-game home winning streak snapped and fell to 36-4 at the United Center. For the Bulls, the 114 points allowed were the most since a 134-123 victory over Denver on February 18th, 1997 -- a span of 109 games.

"I feel good about any win," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "It's especially nice that we came out and played hard and took it to them. It's tough to beat the world champions and that's a big positive we can take from this game."

Chicago's lead over Utah for the NBA's best record dropped to one-half game.

The Bulls had a 30-29 lead after one quarter, but Derrick McKey opened the second with a 10-footer to trigger a 13-2 burst and give Indiana the lead for good. McKey had five points and Rose four in the spurt, which Rose capped with a layup with 6:41 left in the period for a 42-32 lead.

Chicago trimmed the deficit to 54-47 at halftime after Jordan beat the buzzer with a three-pointer. But a dunk by Antonio Davis with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter ignited a 10-0 spurt, which Dale Davis capped with a bucket just under two minutes later to give the Pacers their largest lead at 73-56.

"The object tonight was to make the Bulls do things they're not used to doing," Miller said. "We were able to score in the low post and then control the tempo of the game after that. Defensively, we had them back on their heels and beat them off the dribble. Then we got the ball to the open shooter."

Also in the third quarter, Jordan was called for a technical foul when he threw the ball off Mark Jackson's head after Jackson committed a hard foul on him.

"Anyone that knows Mark Jackson knows he's never trying to hurt anyone," Jackson said. "I got an elbow from him at the other end of the court and I gave him a hard foul at the other end. I just think it was two good teams playing tough defense all the way. I don't read anything more into it."

The Bulls closed the period on a 10-3 run to get within 78-70 entering the fourth. Steve Kerr's three-pointer with 6:25 to play capped a 10-2 spurt as the Bulls got as close as they would get at 88-85.

But Rose answered with a 15-footer 20 seconds later and Miller followed with a pair of free throws as Indiana built a 92-85 advantage with 5:33 to go. Chicago was still within six points with under 2 1/2 minutes remaining, but Rose -- who scored 13 points in the fourth -- made a jumper with 2:09 left for a 104-96 cushion. He added seven free throws in the final 50 seconds to secure the win.

"We got outhustled tonight," Jordan said. "They beat us to loose balls in the second half and we didn't shoot particularly well either. It's a bad loss from our standpoint. I will say the intensity against Indiana has been playoff-like for almost every game. I'm sure their confidence is at an all-time high after beating us here. But we beat them at their place too so it means nothing until the playoffs."

McKey finished with 12 points and Dale Davis had 10 for the Pacers, who shot 51 percent (38-of-74) from the field and outrebounded the Bulls, 34-33. Jackson totaled nine points, 13 assists and seven rebounds.

Dickey Simpkins scored 14 points and Dennis Rodman added a season-high 13 and nine rebounds for Chicago, which shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and was 33-of-41 (80.5 percent) from the foul line. Kerr chipped in 12 points.
