Game Recap

Arvydas Sabonis returned from a six-game absence due to a hip injury to score 16 points and grab nine rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers annihilated the Sacramento Kings, 92-66, to clinch sixth place in the Western Conference.

Walt Williams led Portland with 19 points -- all in the second quarter, when Sacramento managed 21. Isaiah Rider also had 16 points before picking up a pair of technicals after arguing he was fouled on a drive to the basket with 1:44 left in the third quarter and Portland ahead by 26 points.

Corliss Williamson scored 12 points for the Kings, who were held to their lowest point total of the season and have been the worst team in the NBA over the last month. They have dropped four in a row and 16 of their last 17 games.

"Losing wears on you," Sacramento coach Eddie Jordan said. "But competing doesn't wear on you. We were doing things on our own, disregarding team play and I won't stand for it. I just didn't put the ball in the right hands. We tried to share the wealth and I didn't do it."

Williamson opened the third quarter with a jumper to bring Sacramento within 46-38. But Sabonis sank a free throw and Rider buried a three-pointer before consecutive layups by Damon Stoudamire and Sabonis extended Portland's lead to 54-38 with 8:33 remaining in the period.

The lead was 56-42 after Billy Owens' bucket before Rasheed Wallace fueled another 8-0 burst. He had a layup and a dunk, and after a layup by Sabonis, he made a pair of free throws for a 64-42 bulge with 5:33 left in the third period.

Portland kept pouring it on, but that was not enough for Rider. His layup with 1:44 to go in the period made it 74-48, but he thought he was fouled. He picked up his first technical eight seconds later and kept talking during a timeout with 70 seconds left and the Blazers ahead by 22 points before getting hit with his second and an automatic ejection.

"It was a staredown, I guess," Rider said. "I sure didn't say anything from that far, unless he can read lips. I don't know anyone who can read lips from 65 feet, not even a deaf person. That's the truth."

The fourth quarter was atrocious for the Kings, who were nearly outscored by Blazers reserve Kelvin Cato. Cato scored nine points in the period, and his jumper gave Portland its largest lead at 92-64 with 27 seconds to go. Sacramento, which managed just six points in the first 10 1/2 minutes of the period, added six more in the final 90 seconds.

Portland's lead after one quarter was 20-15 before Williams -- a former King -- took over in the second period. He had 13 consecutive Portland points during the quarter and 19 of its last 21 in the half, which ended with the Blazers ahead, 46-36.

"I just started moving well without the ball, just getting the ball where I could score," Williams said. "I was just trying to get myself in the open part of the court and if my guy wasn't up on me I was just pulling the trigger. I felt like I couldn't miss, I just wanted that quarter to go on forever. I was in a zone."

Stoudamire finished with 13 points for the Blazers, who shot 41 percent (36-of-88) from the field and held a 50-43 rebounding advantage.

Owens had 11 points for Sacramento, which shot 39 percent (29-of-74).
