Game Recap

Karl Malone continued his torrid scoring binge with 44 points and Jeff Hornacek and Adam Keefe keyed a 13-4 run to open the game as the Utah Jazz opened a 25-point first-half lead and cruised to a 126-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Malone, who has averaged 42 points per game over his last four games, made 14-of-28 shots from the field, grabbed 14 rebounds and added six assists. Hornacek had five points and Keefe four in the game-opening run as Utah improved to 28-4 since the All-Star break.

"Karl is playing unbelievably," said teammate Austin Carr. "Again, he's playing like the MVP. Hopefully everybody around the league, and the world, notices that because he deserves it again."

"We started off and I thought we had a pretty good rhythn going," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "We kind of lost that, I guess, because we looked at the score. We start looking at the newspaper and that's what happens. You start feeling good about yourself and your arms aren't long enough to pat yourself on the back."

Utah reached the 60-win plateau for the second straight season and third time in the last four campaigns. The Jazz also regained a share of the league's best record, tying the Chicago Bulls at 60-19. Utah owns the tiebreaker edge over Chicago.

The Jazz also remained one-half game ahead of the Seattle SuperSonics for the best record in the Western Conference.

Stephon Marbury led Minnesota with 25 points and 10 assists and Kevin Garnett added 18 and 13 rebounds.

"They jumped on things and they made a lot of shots early," said Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. "They came out with a lot of energy. We didn't come out with a great defensive presence early in the game. That's something that they took advantage of."

"I think we came out real lax on the defensive end," Marbury said. "We didn't come out right away, whereas in the second half, we came out and we started playing aggressive on defense."

Hornacek opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Keefe followed with a layup. Anthony Peeler hit a three-pointer for the Timberwolves but Malone countered with a 20-footer. Keefe sank two free throws for a 9-3 lead with 10:07 left and after a miss by Marbury, Stockton converted a three-point play.

Hornacek then capped the burst with two free throws with 8:38 to go to give the Jazz a 14-3 advantage. Malone had 15 in the quarter as Utah led 36-23 after 12 minutes.

Chris Morris, who came off the bench to score 17 points and grab 11 rebounds, hit a three-pointer with 7:41 left in the first half to put the Jazz on top, 47-27. They would take their biggest lead of the contest at 58-33 on a three-point play by Malone with 4:08 to go in the second quarter.

The Timberwolves finally got the deficit to single digits with just under two minutes left in the third quarter following a 13-foot jumper by Garnett. A rebound by Marbury led to a dunk by Garnett to draw Minnesota within 87-80 with 1:44 to go.

The lead was still 93-86 when Utah went on a 6-0 run to push it back to double digits. Malone scored all three baskets with an 18-footer and two layups.

Malone had 16 in the final quarter as Utah made 13-of-16 shots in the period and hit 11-of-13 free throws.
