Game Recap

Glen Rice and Vlade Divac scored pivotal baskets in a decisive fourth-quarter burst as the Charlotte Hornets rallied for a 109-103 victory over the New Jersey Nets, who again were denied an Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Rice finished with 21 points and Divac added 20 and 12 rebounds for Charlotte (50-30), which has a two-game lead over Atlanta for the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Should the Hornets finish fourth, they will have homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Charlotte also recorded its second straight 50-win season and third in franchise history.

Sam Cassell had 27 points and 10 assists and Chris Gatling added a season-high 25 points for New Jersey, which squandered a chance to clinch a playoff berth for the second straight night. The Nets (42-38), who have not reached the playoffs since 1994, fell into a seventh-place tie with the New York Knicks.

The Hornets took their largest lead of the game at 97-89 on two free throws by B.J. Armstrong with 8:02 to play. But Chris Gatling spurred a 12-0 run by the Nets, who took a 101-97 advantage on a dunk by Keith Van Horn with 4:15 to go.

But for the second straight night, the Nets collapsed under the weight of trying to put away their most important game of their season.

Charlotte's David Wesley drilled a three-pointer with 3:57 left. Anthony Mason then found a cutting Divac underneath the basket for a reverse dunk that gave the Hornets a 102-101 edge at the 2:40 mark.

After a timeout, Cassell was called for traveling as he tried to drive the lane. Rice made the Nets pay on the other end when he hit a 20-footer as the shot clock wound down, pushing the lead to 104-101 with 2:02 remaining.

Cassell and Mason traded misses before Gatling hit an 18-footer to cut the deficit to one. Rice missed a 15-footer, giving New Jersey a chance to take the lead. But Wesley stripped Van Horn as he drove into the lane.

Dell Curry hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to make it 106-103. The Nets called timeout to set up a final play and worked the ball to Kerry Kittles, who got a clean look but missed a three-pointer from the left wing.

Wesley made a free throw, and Bobby Phills had a layup with 2.3 seconds to go to complete the scoring.

Divac and Armstrong combined for 13 points in a 17-8 burst as Charlotte took a 34-21 lead with 1:03 remaining in the first quarter. The Hornets held a 49-37 lead midway through the second quarter, but Cassell highlighted a 15-3 burst with nine points, drawing New Jersey even at 52-52 with 2:47 to go in the half.

Van Horn finished with 24 points for the Nets, who shot 48 percent (42-of-88) from the field but missed all six of their three-pointers.

Seven players finished in double figures for Charlotte as Armstrong scored 15, Wesley 13, Curry 12 and Mason and Phills added 10 apiece. The Hornets, who made 6-of-13 from behind the arc, shot 51 percent (41-of-81) and had 29 assists, including seven each by Armstrong and Phills.
