Game Recap

Tim Duncan collected 32 points and 10 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs pulled away for a 110-97 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies, keeping their hopes alive for grabbing homecourt advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

Injured All-Star center David Robinson missed his third straight game for the Spurs, who moved within one game of the Phoenix Suns for fourth place in the Western Conference. San Antonio must win its final two games -- at Seattle on Friday and against Vancouver on Sunday -- and Phoenix must lose its final two contests against Utah and Houston for the Spurs to take homecourt advantage in the first round.

Jaren Jackson added 20 points and Will Perdue contributed 18 and 10 boards for San Antonio, which has gone 2-1 without Robinson after losing two straight games.

"We were able to capitalize on the lack of their height," Perdue said. "We were able to force it down the middle to score and we got some rebounds."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 32 points but was unable to prevent Vancouver from suffering its 10th loss in 12 games. Tony Massenburg had a season-high 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost five straight games against the Spurs.

Vancouver trailed throughout most of the contest but was within 83-82 early in the fourth quarter after Abdur-Rahim drained a short jumper. But San Antonio reeled off the next nine points and the Grizzlies never challenged after that.

"Night in and night out in the NBA, you're going to get a game from people," Duncan said. "You just have to push through and perservere. They gave us a run for it, we held them off and pushed back at them."

Malik Rose opened that spurt with a free throw before Duncan hit a layup, Jackson drained a three-pointer and Perdue sank a pair of foul shots to build a 91-82 lead with 7:13 to play.

Vancouver got no closer than seven points the rest of the way en route to its sixth loss in the last seven home games.

Duncan shot 15-of-28 from the field, handed out six assists and blocked six shots.

"The key tonight had to be Duncan, he was very tough," Abdur-Rahim said. "He's very talented and one of those players who can do a lot of things. You saw it in this game, he basically did it all."

Duncan continued his solid play in place of Robinson, who has been sidelined since suffering a concussion and a twisted knee as a result of an elbow to the head by Utah's Karl Malone one week ago.

"As you know, my main concern is having people healthy for the playoffs. David is the primary concern and until he's 100 percent, I don't want him on the floor," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Whether he feels good or not, I want to feel comfortable that once he goes back on the floor, he's ready for the duration."

Duncan scored six points in a 9-2 spurt that gave the Spurs a 23-11 lead with three minutes left in the opening period. He finished with 12 points in the quarter, leading San Antonio to a 30-18 cushion.

Abdur-Rahim scored 14 straight Vancouver points to help pull the Grizzlies within 39-35 midway through the second quarter. With 3:11 left in the period, Duncan hit a 16-footer, Perdue made a layup and Jackson buried one of his four three-pointers to build a 52-41 cushion.

The Grizzlies kept within striking distance as Massenburg scored 14 points and Blue Edwards added 13 in the third period. Vancouver cut the deficit to 83-80 heading into the fourth quarter, but was never able to take the lead.

Edwards scored 22 points for Vancouver, which missed just one of its 27 free throws and outrebounded the Spurs, 44-40. But the Grizzlies shot just 43 percent from the field (34-of-79) and were outscored in the paint, 54-30.

"Their inside game overmatched us at times and that was the difference," Edwards said.

Reggie Geary chipped in 13 points and Rose added 10 for San Antonio, which shot 51 percent (43-of-84) and scored 16 points off 14 Vancouver turnovers. Avery Johnson handed out 10 assists as the Spurs committed just nine turnovers, resulting in five points for the Grizzlies.
