Game Recap

Rasheed Wallace scored 11 of his 21 points in the third quarter to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 99-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, who suffered their 10th straight loss.

Arvydas Sabonis added 20 points for the Trail Blazers, who have owned this series in recent years, especially at home. They defeated the hapless Clippers for the eighth straight time and 13th in a row at Portland. The Blazers have won 15 of the last 17 meetings overall.

Isaac Austin scored 23 points for Los Angeles, which is in the midst of its longest losing streak since dropping 16 in a row to open the 1994-95 season. The Clippers have dropped 15 of their last 16 games.

"We came away with the 'W' but I wasn't pleased with the way that we played," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Defensively we were soft. We started out OK, but then we seemed to lose our way. We were a little better in the second half."

The Clippers had a 54-51 lead after a jumper by Darrick Martin with 10:36 left in the third quarter. But Wallace responded with a dunk 29 seconds later to ignite a 12-3 burst that he fueled with seven points. His layup at the 6:15 mark gave Portland the lead for good at 57-56 and he followed that with a three-point play for a four-point lead.

Damon Stoudamire capped the spurt with a free throw to give the Blazers a 63-57 lead with 4:43 remaining in the third. Wallace added a bucket and a pair of free throws in the final three minutes as Portland pushed the advantage to as much as 11 points before settling for a 77-68 lead entering the fourth.

"We are just out there playing," Wallace said. "We kind of went through the motions. We have a big game Sunday (against Seattle), so we aren't looking too far ahead. I am just trying to play hard and prepare for the postseason."

Portland scored six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter to open its largest lead at 86-71 after a pair of free throws by Isaiah Rider. But the Clippers scored the next eight points to climb within 86-79 following a jumper by Austin with 6:17 to play.

The Blazers finally put the game away by scoring the next seven points -- five from Rider. His jumper with 2:18 to go gave Portland a 93-79 bulge.

Portland raced to a 16-4 lead and led by as much as 13 points in the first quarter before settling for a 35-25 lead. The Blazers were up 42-29 after Gary Grant's three-point play three minutes into the second, but Lorenzen Wright's jumper with 8:01 left in the period triggered a 13-0 spurt. Austin capped it with a jumper for a 42-42 tie with 4:40 remaining in the half and Los Angeles led, 52-50, at halftime.

"We had a great 13-0 run in the second quarter and I came back with those same guys in the third and we ran on empty," Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch said. "In one period we missed two easy layups and that's when the game escaped us. When you get easy looks and can't make them it really kills you."

Rider and Stoudamire scored 17 points apiece for the Blazers, who shot 44 percent (35-of-80) from the field. Sabonis grabbed 12 rebounds for his 36th double-double, leading Portland to a 44-38 advantage on the boards.

Lamond Murray scored 22 points and Rodney Rogers added 14 for the Clippers, who shot 47 percent (39-of-83) and lost for the 43rd time in their last 46 trips to Portland.
