Game RecapAntoine Walker had 17 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Walter McCarty keyed a pivotal second-half run with a three-pointer as the Boston Celtics snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 78-71.
Greg Minor scored 15 points and McCarty added nine and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Celtics (36-45), who matched their highest victory total since going 48-34 in the 1992-93 season. Boston was a franchise-worst 15-67 mark last season.
"We got the job done," said McCarty. "It was a good game plan. The strategy worked for us. They played real good defense but we just cut to the basket well tonight."
The Celtics were without coach Rick Pitino, the architect for much of this season's success. Pitino missed the game with an illness and assistant Jim O'Brien filled in as coach.
"It was a big adjustment," said O'Brien. "When you are on the bench you are worrying about different things but when you are the head coach you have to worry about all the phases. You have to make the final decisions."
"Coach O'Brien runs a lot of the practices," Walker said. "He is sort of our defensive coordinator. We are professionals and we have to stick to the game plan. It was a little different without Rick out there, there wasn't as much hollering on each play."
Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 26 points for playoff-bound Cleveland, which lost for just the fourth time in its last 16 games. Shawn Kemp added 13 and eight rebounds. The loss snapped the Cavaliers' three-game winning streak against Boston.
A layup by Ilgauskas knotted the contest, 46-46, 46 seconds into the second half. McCarty gave Boston the lead for good with a three-pointer 16 seconds later. After a shot-clock violation and a pair of turnovers, Ron Mercer buried a 17-footer to push the advantage to 51-46. Andrew DeClercq followed with two free throws with 9:18 left in the quarter.
After a dunk by Ilgauskas cut the deficit to 53-48, Walker hit a free throw and jumper. Mercer then capped the burst with a 14-footer with 7:50 left in the period.
Cleveland got within 58-54 with 5:54 to go in the quarter, but Walker buried consecutive jumpers to push the lead back to eight. The Cavaliers never got closer than six thereafter, and Boston pushed its advantage to 12 in the final quarter despite making just 5-of-15 shots in the period.
Cleveland was 3-for-18 in the final quarter and scored just 11 points. The Cavaliers also missed all nine of their three-point attempts and committed 16 turnovers.
"We have been playing flat for the last couple of games," Kemp said. "We still have one regular-season game left and it is a big one. We have to get fired up. We are a young team so we should be able to do that. We'll be in good shape, there are no excuses when the playoffs begin."
