Game Recap

Karl Malone scored 29 points as the Utah Jazz secured homecourt advantage throughout the postseason by cooling off the Phoenix Suns, 102-99.

Bryon Russell added eight of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz (62-19), who, coupled with Seattle's loss to San Antonio, clinched the best record in the Western Conference for the second straight year.

The Jazz and Chicago Bulls (61-20) could finish with the same record, but Utah swept the season series to win the tiebreaker. Last season, Chicago had homecourt throughout the playoffs and beat the Jazz in six games in the NBA Finals.

"That was a good win for us, obviously, coming in here and playing these guys, and they have been playing very well," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I thought they played well all night it seemed like and we couldn't get them shut off til just right at the end of the ballgame."

Rex Chapman scored 25 points and Clifford Robinson added 24 for the Suns, who had their 10-game winning streak snapped and failed to clinch fourth place in the West. Phoenix can still finish fourth and earn homecourt advantage for the first round of the playoffs by winning at Houston on Sunday or if San Antonio loses to Denver.

"It was two teams out there who really fought hard for it," Robinson said. "It was right there for us. Those guys just made a couple more plays than we did. It was definitely playoff intensity-type basketball, and right now, we came out on the short end of the stick. But we still have another opportunity Sunday to secure homecourt and hopefully we can come out and take care of business."

Phoenix had its largest lead at 67-60 when Robinson capped a 15-2 burst with a layup with 4:37 remaining in the third quarter. Utah trimmed the deficit to 78-73 entering the fourth before Russell fueled a pivotal burst.

Malone opened the fourth with a layup to trigger an 11-4 spurt of which Russell scored Utah's final five points. His three-point play gave Utah an 82-81 lead with 8:23 to go and his layup at the 7:47 mark capped the run for an 84-82 Utah lead.

The game was tied for the final time at 92-92 on a bucket by Jason Kidd with 4:15 to play. But Malone knocked down a seven-footer and Shandon Anderson followed with a layup for a four-point advantage with 2:57 left. Rex Chapman buried a three-pointer to bring Phoenix within one point, but John Stockton made a runner in the lane and Russell sank two free throws for a 100-95 cushion with 55 seconds to go.

Chapman made a layup, and after Malone one free throw, Kidd made a layup to cut the deficit to 101-99 with 34 seconds left. Russell made only one free throw to leave the door open, but Phoenix turned the ball over on the other end.

Jeff Hornacek and Howard Eisley scored 13 points apiece for the Jazz, who shot 56 percent (40-of-72) from the field. Eisley added 10 assists.

"We came in here tonight knowing that they were on a role with a 10-game winning streak," Hornacek said. "I'm just glad we were fortunate to pull out a win tonight."

Kevin Johnson finished with 13 points and Kidd had 12 points and a season high-tying 16 assists for the Suns, who shot 48 percent (34-of-71).
