Game Recap

Chris Webber had 27 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists as the Washington Bullets rallied from the brink of playoff elimination by closing the third quarter with a 17-3 run and defeating the Boston Celtics, 112-95.

The Wizards, who will make the playoffs only if both the New Jersey Nets and Orlando Magic lose on Sunday, trailed 69-64 with 4:36 left in the third quarter. But a basket by Chris Whitney sparked a 17-3 burst that included a technical foul on Antoine Walker and capped by two dunks by Darvin Ham.

Tracy Murray had five points and Whitney added four during the run.

The Wizards built on their 81-72 lead by opening the final quarter with an 8-3 burst that left them ahead 14 with 9:40 to go. The Celtics got within 10 with just over five minutes remaining, but Murray drained a long three-pointer and Boston committed a turnover on its next possession.

New Jersey, which occupies the eighth and final playoff spot, hosts Detroit. If the Nets lose, they would finish tied with the Wizards, but Washington would advance by virtue of taking three of four games in the season series.

Even if New Jersey loses, the Nets would advance if Orlando -- which plays at Charlotte -- defeats the Hornets. That would leave New Jersey, Washington and Orlando tied and New Jersey would be the eighth seed thanks to a better conference record. Orlando cannot make the playoffs under any scenario.

"One thing you can say is that we all stuck together this season," Webber said. "It has been tough and stressful but as a team we like that challenge. We were fighting all the way but this is definitely not what I expected. We wanted to control our destiny."

Murray finished with 21 points and Whitney added 18 for Washington, which won four straight down the stretch. It was the first four-game winning streak for the Wizards since capturing six straight from December 15th-26th.

"Whatever happens, I'm proud of these guys," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "They have stepped it up big time, especially in difficult situations. I'm glad I have another opportunity to sit and agonize over tomorrow's game."

"Put aside all the trials and tribulations and I think we had a good season," Murray said. "It was us against the world all year. It was nice to end on a positive note though. The smoke is all clear, we are all tight."

Walker and Ron Mercer scored 18 points apiece for Boston, which finished 36-46, its best season since going 48-34 in 1992-93. The Celtics were a franchise-worst 15-67 last season.

"We have had good improvement," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "Some guys can make tremendous strides. If I look at this year and judge it, I would have a smile on my face. Now we must improve on talent before we can make it to the playoffs."

A basket by Mercer put the Celtics up 69-64 but Whitney followed with a jumper and a free throw. Webber's basket knotted the score and Boton saw a loose ball bounce out of bounds at the other end. Walker continued to complain and was whistled for a technical.

Whitney made the free throw and Murray added two free throws for a 72-69 lead with 2:41 to go. Tyus Edney got Boston within a basket with a free throw, but God Shammgod countered with a layup and Murray buried a three-pointer for a 77-70 lead with 67 seconds left in the quarter.

Greg Minor hit a driving layup to cut the Celtics deficit to 77-72, but Ham threw down consecutive dunks to push the lead to nine.

Walker, who is a free agent this off-season, added 13 rebounds and five assists.

"To be honest, I don't know if I will be here next season," Walker said. "My intention is to stay but coach is making half of the decision and the owners are making the other half. We'll just wait and see."

Whitney finished with 18 points and five assists and Ben Wallace had six points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who finished at 42-40, a two-game dropoff from last season.
