Game Recap

Glen Rice scored 26 points and as the Charlotte Hornets wrapped up homecourt advantage for the first round of the playoffs with an 89-76 whipping of the Orlando Magic.

Bobby Phills added 14 points for the Hornets, who finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 51-31 record and will have homecourt advantage against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs. Charlotte, however, lost all four games to the Hawks this season, the only team it failed to beat.

The Hornets, who have won only one playoff series in franchise history, finished three games off last season's record-setting 54-win season. Charlotte has an overall record of 5-11 in the playoffs, including a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks last season.

"This was just what we needed, to go into the playoffs on a good note," Rice said. "Today was a total team effort and we have to carry that into the playoffs. We played defensive aggressively like we can and everyone was on the right page. If we can play like we can, we're going to be tough."

Derek Strong scored 21 points and Gerald Wilkins added 13 for Orlando, which finished a disappointing 41-41 in Chuck Daly's first season as coach. The Magic, who were without All-Star guard Penny Hardaway for all but 19 games this season, missed the playoffs for the first time in five seasons.

"Hopefully, next year's season will be a little more promising," said Magic guard Nick Anderson. "It has been real different for our whole ballclub throughout the whole year."

Orlando led 27-21 early in the second quarter, but Phills scored six points in a 12-3 burst that gave the Hornets a 33-30 lead with 6:25 to go. The Magic pulled even at 35-35 on a free throw by Bo Outlaw, but Anthony Mason had a 10-footer and layup around a jumper by Donald Royal and B.J. Armstrong hit a 21-footer to give Charlotte a 43-35 lead at the 2:14 mark.

The Hornets led 47-39 at halftime and put the game out of reach by scoring the first nine points of the second half. Rice had five points in the burst, including a three-point play on a transition layup for a 56-39 advantage with 7:07 to go in the third quarter.

Mason and Vlade Divac each had 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Charlotte, which shot 48 percent (40-of-84) from the field and went to the foul line just six times.

"We met the challenge today," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "We had our backs to the wall and we rose to the occasion. We had six guys in double figures. We played a nice ballgame all around. Bobby really came to play and B.J. was terrific. Glen had a monster game and Mase did a nice job handling double teams."

Before leaving the game with a sprained right shoulder midway through the fourth quarter, Anderson was the top starting scorer for Orlando with 11 points. The Magic shot 37 percent (26-of-70) and committed 20 turnovers that led to 22 points.
