Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- With Anthony Mason out for the season and Glen Rice sidelined with an elbow injury, the Charlotte Hornets were expected to have trouble scoring points.

The Hornets were held to the lowest output in franchise history in a 78-66 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Charlotte shot just 34 percent (24-of-70) from the field and was held to nine points in the fourth quarter.

"Overall I thought we had spots where we played well," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "It wasn't a pretty game but I thought the guys gave a great effort. Our first team started a little slow but I thought our second unit gave us a great lift. Our shooting percentages were way down. We only shot 50 percent (12-for-24) from the line and that's not Hornets basketball."

Bobby Phills scored 15 points and former 76er Derrick Coleman added 11 and 15 rebounds for Charlotte. The Hornets were held to 68 points twice, most recently in an 81-68 loss to the New Jersey Nets on January 13, 1998.

Mason, Charlotte's leading rebounder, was declared out for the season with a ruptured biceps. Rice, the Hornets' leading scorer, is sidelined six to eight weeks following surgery.

Philadelphia's offense was not very good, either. Allen Iverson had 15 points and nine rebounds but made just 4-of-17 shots. Theo Ratliff added 13 points and nine rebounds for the 76ers, who lost their first five games last season.

"We were a little nervous tonight, we shot the ball a little too quickly," said Philadelphia coach Larry Brown. "I think we have to honor the big guys and not settle for the jumpers as much. Our bench played wonderful tonight."

"In the past I have always felt that I needed to have a big game to have an impressive win," Iverson said. "Tonight we had a lot of other guys step up."

The Sixers had a bright spot in rookie Larry Hughes, who had 11 points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Hughes had a two-handed follow dunk after Iverson missed a layup to give Philadelphia a 70-59 lead with 4:21 remaining.

"Larry Hughes did a lot of great things for us tonight," Brown said. "Larry has a great instinct for the game. It was nice to win with Allen Iverson playing more poorly than usual. I don't think that could have happened in the past."

Eric Snow totaled 10 points for Philadelphia, which shot 38 percent (32-of-84), including 3-of-12 from three-point range.

Charlotte opened the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt to close within 48-47 when David Wesley made a 15-footer 3:51 into the period. It was the only basket for Wesley, who missed 10 shots. After George Lynch and Coleman traded baskets, Phills dunked on fast break to give the Hornets their first lead since the first quarter, 51-50.

"I don't think there is a lot of good that I can see right now," Wesley said. "Right now I can't think. I don't think either team shot the ball well. No team is really in a good rhythm."

Lynch made a 12-footer to put the Sixers ahead, 52-51, with 4:58 left in the period. The Hornets had just one more lead at 57-56 on Chucky Brown's jumper with 1:27 to go. Ratliff answered with a dunk and Snow drove for a layup with seven second left and Philadelphia took a 60-57 lead into the final quarter.

Lynch dunked to open the fourth quarter and Charlotte did not score until rookie Ricky Davis made an 18-footer with 9:19 to go.

The Sixers scored the next 12 points and opened a 74-59 bulge when former Hornet Matt Geiger made a short jumper with 3:15 left. Geiger, Iverson and Hughes each had two baskets during the run. Charlotte did not score until Phills made one free throw with 2:17 to go.
