Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton made sure that the Paul Westphal era in Seattle got off to a successful start.

Payton scored 28 points, including six in overtime, as the SuperSonics survived a tight struggle with the Dallas Mavericks to give their new coach a 92-86 victory in his debut.

"Payton is one of the best players in the league," Westphal said. "He can reach down and make plays when he needs to. He was sensational."

"The coach wanted to keep the ball in my hands," added Payton. "He wanted me to go out and make things happen."

A.C. Green hit a jump shot with 1:07 remaining in regulation that drew Dallas even at 84-84. Neither team was able to score in the closing moments of regulation and the Mavericks went stone cold from the field in overtime, missing their first five shots. Payton scored six straight points to put his team ahead for good, 90-84 with 2:13 remaining.

Westphal took over the coaching reins from George Karl, who was fired in the offseason. He began his tenure by ending shooting guard Hersey Hawkins' consecutive starts streak at 431 games by putting 6-9 Billy Owens in the opening lineup.

"I was fine with it," Hawkins said. "People make a bigger deal of it than it is."

"It's kind of odd not starting with Hawk," added Payton. "But you've got to adjust to it."

Vin Baker scored 18 points and new center Olden Polynice made an instant impact, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Seattle held a 52-42 advantage on the boards, a problem area last season.

"Early on we struggled," said Polynice. "But once we got in the flow of it, it was like all the instincts came back. I had to do something to get myself pumped up. The offensive rebounds were there for me."

Cedric Ceballos came off the bench to score 16 points, including 14 after halftime, and Shawn Bradley added 11 for the Mavericks, who were just 1-of-10 from the field in overtime.

Michael Finley, Dallas' leading scorer last season, was held to just nine points on a woeful 4-of-17 shooting performance.

The much-anticipated debut of German rookie Dirk Nowitzki also was a disappointment for the Mavericks. The 20-year-old big man was held to just two points and missed all five of his shots in 16 minutes.

"It was a pretty gutsy effort," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "All game long (Finley) was not in his rhythm. He didn't have a good game but he hung in there. Other than that we played pretty well. Opening night, overtime, the game was there for us. You have to be pleased."

Seattle improved to 13-2 in its last 15 season openers and avenged last season's 89-81 loss to Dallas in its home opener.

Veteran sharpshooter Dale Ellis drained a 3-pointer with 8:41 left that evened the contest at 72-72 and Payton made a layup to put the Sonics by two with 8:23 left.

Ellis' ensuing follow shot extended the advantage to 76-72 but Dallas would not go away. Ceballos made a layup to cut the deficit to two before Payton scored off a spin move underneath to make it 78-74 with 5:30 to go.

New Dallas point guard Steve Nash nailed a 3-pointer to get Dallas within one and after Payton scored again, Finley connected from beyond the arc to even the score at 80-80.

The Sonics reclaimed the lead on Payton's third straight basket, but Ceballos made a pair from the line to knot the score at 82-82 with 2:52 remaining.

Baker dunked off a pinpoint feed from Payton with 2:34 to go to give Seattle an 84-82 lead, but Green's 15-footer from just to the right of the key sent the game into overtime.

Payton opened the scoring in the overtime with a 20-footer from the left corner. After making a pair of free throws, he went coast-to-coast for a driving layup that stretched the advantage to 90-84 with 2:13 left.

Seattle used 20 offensive rebounds in building a 26-13 advantage in second-chance points.
