Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns cleared out a huge part of their roster to sign free agent Tom Gugliotta and he did not disappoint in his debut.

Gugliotta, who signed a six-year, $58 million contract, scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Suns to a 101-92 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, spoiling the debut of coach Chris Ford.

Gugliotta converted 10-of-13 free throws and played 41 minutes to help the Suns defeat the Clippers on opening night for the second straight season.

"I was just so excited to play a real game," Gugliotta said. "These games are more important now that we only play a few. We played really good at the outstretch of the game, but our defense wasn't aggressive at times."

Phoenix took control of the contest by scoring the first 17 points of the second half to open a 70-56 advantage with 6:29 left in the third quarter. Cliff Robinson scored eight points during the spurt to help the Suns win their fifth straight meeting with the Clippers.

"(At halftime) We just talked about things we wern't doing defensively," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "I think we had more energy in the second half. Their trap caught us off guard in the first half and we just played too passively."

Los Angeles' frontcourt became less of a factor when Rodney Rogers and Maurice Taylor each picked up their fifth fouls in the third quarter. Despite their absence, the Clippers were able to cut the deficit to 80-73 after three quarters.

Phoenix left no doubt about the outcome by extending its lead to 94-80 after a steal and dunk by Jason Kidd with five minutes remaining. Kidd finished with 18 points and 10 assists.

Gugliotta dislocated the ring finger on his left hand after Clippers top draft choice Michael Olowokandi came down on him late in the contest. He will be re-evaluated, but is not expected to miss any time.

Phoenix ended up dominating Los Angeles down low, holding a 62-40 advantage inside the paint and gaining a 45-43 edge in rebounding.

The Suns took full advantage of the Clippers' 21 turnovers by turning them into 26 points. Phoenix also held a 23-10 edge in fast-break points.

"We couldn't get back on transition," Ford said. "In order for us to do well we need to talk and build on the positives. We hung tough at the end but that 17-0 run when you're playing a good team like Phoenix is hard to overcome."

Eric Piatkowski led the Clippers with 16 points but just five in the second half. Lamond Murray and Olowokandi added 14 apiece.

"I felt good," Olowokandi said. "Tonight we were disappointed we couldn't provide better for our fans and we hope they will continue to be patient for us. We want the fans to keep coming."
