OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- With three of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players on their roster, the Houston Rockets turned to a rookie second-round pick to give them their first victory of the season.

Cuttino Mobley drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 19 seconds remaining and Tony Delk's potential game-winning shot banged off the rim as time expired as the Houston Rockets posted a 86-84 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

After Mobley put the Rockets ahead, Muggsy Bogues dribbled down the left sideline and lost the ball, giving it to Houston with 12 seconds left.

Matt Maloney was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Rockets an 86-84 advantage. Delk, who made seven 3-pointers for Kentucky in the 1996 NCAA Championship game, had a good look but misfired.

Mobley, a guard from Rhode Island drafted 41st overall, scored 13 points. Charles Barkley had his second straight monstrous game with 18 points and 20 rebounds for the Rockets, who rebounded from Friday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

John Starks, acquired in the Latrell Sprewell trade with the New York Knicks, led the Warriors with 15 points. Delk added 12 points for Golden State, which was playing it season opener.

With the Rockets ahead 51-47 with 9:23 left in the third quarter, Golden State used a 21-4 surge, fueled by nine points from Starks to take its biggest lead of the game at 67-55 with 2:51 remaining in the period.

Starks connected on 5-of-13 shots and also had six rebounds and six assists in his Warriors debut.

Delk sank a jumper to give the Warriors a 77-66 lead with 10:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, but that would be their last basket for nearly six minutes.

Matt Bullard sank a 3-pointer and Othella Harrington converted a layup to trigger a surge of 15 straight points from Houston. Barkley hit a short jumper to knot the score, 77-77, with 7:13 to play and followed that up with four straight free throws to provide Houston an 81-77 advantage with 5:49 left.

Barkley, who has 49 points and 35 rebounds in his first two games, scored 10 of his points in the final period. He finished 6-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the foul line.

But after Barkley's free throws, Adonal Foyle made 1-of-2 free throws and Terry Cummings buried a jumper from the left baseline to pull the Warriors within 81-80 with 4:35 left.

Hakeem Olajuwon made a free throw to give Houston an 82-80 lead before Starks answered with a pair of foul shots to knot the score. Starks then set up Foyle for a dunk that gave the Warriors an 84-82 lead with 84 seconds left.

Scottie Pippen, acquired in the offseason from the three-time defending world champion Chicago Bulls, finished with 17 points and three rebounds for Houston. He shot 5-of-11 from the floor after going 4-of-18 in Friday's season-opening loss.

The Rockets shot 45% (27-of-60) while Golden State finished at 42% (33-of-78). The Warriors also forced 21 turnovers they converted into 25 points.
