Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The last time the Philadelphia 76ers were 2-0, the Orlando Magic were 1 year old.

The 76ers again used strong defense to overcome poor shooting in a 95-75 victory over the Magic, winning their first two games for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

Matt Geiger scored eight of his 20 points in the third quarter and Theo Ratliff added 17 and 13 rebounds for Philadelphia, which held Orlando to 28 points in the second half. In a 78-66 victory at Charlotte on Friday, the Sixers limited the Hornets to 26 second-half points.

"We're starting to build the kind of characteristic this team needs in order to win," said Geiger, who signed a six-year, $48 million deal as a free agent during the offseason.

"I haven't had a start like this in years," Sixers guard Allen Iverson said. "I told my teammates I feel like I'm at Georgetown again. This feels different. Usually we're trying to fight our way out of a hole."

The Sixers won despite another poor shooting game from Iverson, who had 16 points and 10 assists but was 5-of-18 for the second straight night. Iverson and Tim Thomas teamed up in a fourth-quarter run that sealed the win.

"I can't ever remember missing that many shots," Iverson said. "I couldn't throw a rock in the ocean, but once again my teammates bailed me out. It's good to know I don't have to have a great game and we can still beat a good team."

Penny Hardaway scored 24 points for the Magic, who were coming off a win over New York in Friday's season opener and had beaten Philadelphia four straight times. Orlando entered the NBA as an expansion team in 1989.

"They were a step faster than us. We were lethargic coming out," Hardaway said. "It was the total opposite of what we had vs. New York."

The Sixers took the lead for good with an 11-0 run early in the third quarter. Geiger began and ended the burst with mid-range jumpers as Philadelphia built a 59-49 lead with 7:15 remaining.

Jumpers by Geiger, Aaron McKie and Iverson closed the period and widened the lead to 71-58. A runner by Hardaway cut the deficit to 71-64 before Iverson and Thomas took over, combining for nine points in a 14-2 burst.

Thomas scored nine straight Philadelphia points, the last two in spectacular fashion. Iverson took a long trap-breaking pass, avoided a collision with a defender, took a dribble and lobbed a pas to Thomas, who hammered it home to give Philadelphia its largest lead at 90-69 with 5:54 left.

Thomas scored 13 points for the Sixers, who shot 46 percent (34-of-74) from the field and held a 50-38 rebounding edge.

Nick Anderson and Isaac Austin scored 10 points apiece for the Magic, who shot just 38 percent (26-of-69) and committed 21 turnovers.

"They dominated us inside and they ourebounded us," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "As big as we are, we should have done a better job."

The game featured a meeting of twin forwards Harvey and Horace Grant. Philadelphia's Harvey Grant came off the bench and scored five points. Orlando's Horace started and scored two.

"I'll take 2-0 any day," Harvey Grant said. "If we keep playing like we played the last two games and keep learning and minimizing mistakes, we are going to be OK."

In the fourth quarter, Dominique Wilkins came on for the Magic, playing his first game since the 1996-97 season. Eighth on the NBA's all-time scoring list, Wilkins scored three points, missing 6-of-7 free throws. He spent last season in Europe.

The Sixers improved to 26-9 in home openers.
