Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Toni Kukoc made sure Tim Floyd did not have to wait long for his first NBA victory.

One of the few holdovers on the three-time defending champions, Kukoc had 22 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Chicago Bulls to an 89-84 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kukoc's ninth rebound was the most clutch as teammate Andrew Lang missed a free throw with Chicago ahead 87-84 and 7.3 seconds to go. Kukoc hauled in the loose ball and found Brent Barry, who was fouled. Barry, a former Clipper, sank a pair of free throws to seal the victory.

"It feels good to get that first win," Kukoc said. "We were not going to go 0-50 like people said we would. I am glad we got our first win and now we can get our first win at home. Every game is going to be hard this year."

The win should end speculation that Floyd, who has the unenviable task of replacing Phil Jackson, could wait a while for the Bulls to win in the post-Michael Jordan era.

"It's not 0-50, which is all Coach Floyd had been hearing about," Barry said. "We made it exciting with some missed free throws."

"We didn't get the first one, but 1-1 on this trip we would take given the makeup of our team," Floyd said. "It's nice to get the first one, but I knew it would happen eventually."

Chicago has won the last seven meetings with the Clippers and nine straight in Los Angeles, going the entire decade without losing on the road in the series.

Lamond Murray led a fourth-quarter comeback and finished with 20 points for the Clippers, who trailed by as many as 20 in the first half.

"We felt like we were the better team coming into the game," Murray said. "They have a lot of guys who are new to their team and we have a lot of guys returning. But they came out and played very hard, they attacked the offensive glass and played good defense."

Los Angeles whittled the Chicago lead down to 70-68 with 10 minutes left but the Bulls answered with a 10-3 run. Ron Harper, a former Clipper who had nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, capped the burst with an eight-footer.

After Maurice Taylor and Harper exchanged baskets, the Clippers went on a 7-0 run. Murray's 13-footer with 1:51 to go got Los Angeles within 82-80.

The Bulls lead was 86-84 with 17 seconds remaining when Los Angeles' Darrick Martin missed a wide open jumper. Lang grabbed the rebound and made one of two free throws, setting the stage for Kukoc's pivotal rebound.

"We are a team that other teams think is a very sorry team," Harper said. "I don't think there is too much truth to that. I think if we can go out an play hard we will be all right. We wanted to make it easy for coach Floyd."

While Floyd got his first win with the Bulls, Chris Ford fell to 0-2 as coach of the Clippers.
