Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Tom Gugliotta had 29 points and 13 rebounds and Jason Kidd added 17 points and 14 assists as the Phoenix Suns spoiled the return of Antonio McDyess with a 115-108 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Gugliotta signed as a free agent after Phoenix lost a custody battle with Denver for McDyess. He made 9-of-14 shots from the field and 11-of-13 free throws.

"He has a radar, he'll find it and he knows what to do with it," said Kidd of Gugliotta. "Twenty-nine points and 13 rebounds, that's not a bad night."

Booed every time he touched the ball, McDyess had 28 points and eight rebounds as the Nuggets suffered their seventh straight loss to the Suns. He sustained bruised ribs after colliding with Phoenix rookie Pat Garrity with 4:51 left in the second quarter.

"It was a struggle out there," McDyess said. "I just wanted to come out there and play well. The only time the boos really got to me was at the free throw line. I can deal with this loss because we came out there and hustled. It's tough to come in here and win."

McDyess returned in the third but struggled until the final period, when he scored 13 of Denver's first 15 points. Chauncey Billups scored 21 points and Nick Van Exel added 20 and eight assists for Denver, which is 0-2 and began last season with 12 straight losses. Rookie Raef LaFrentz had 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Suns maintained the lead for the entire second half, but Denver closed within 104-100 when McDyess dunked with 2:09 to play. Kidd stole a pass from Van Exel and drove all the way for a layup to give the Suns a six-point lead with 1:34 left.

"I'm happy we got a win because we didn't play very well defesively, particularly in the first half," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "We've got a lot of work to do offensively and defensively. I am proud of the guys cause they found ways to win."

Denver cut the deficit to 106-103 when Billup hit a 3-pointer with 66 seconds to play, but Gugliotta responded with a 15-footer 16 seconds later. LaFrentz dunked to make it 108-105 with 38.7 seconds left.

Gugliotta came back with a dunk, but was called for hanging on the rim and Billup made the free throw to cut the deficit to 110-106 with 26 seconds to play. LaFrentz made a pair of free throws, pulling the Nuggets within 110-108 with 16 seconds remaining, but George McCloud did the same to give Phoenix a four-point lead.

Kidd and rookie Toby Bailey iced the win by making 3-of-4 free throws after Denver missed successive 3-point attempts.

Phoenix shot 59.5 percent in the first half and held a 58-52 lead at halftime. The Suns kept the margin between five and 11 points in the third and took an 82-73 lead into the fourth.
