Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- If Chris Webber is supposed to be one of the NBA's most underachieving players, he has not shown it through the first two games of the season.

Webber scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 109-87 romp over the Vancouver Grizzlies, ending an eight-game losing streak that dated to last season.

Acquired in the offseason from Washington for Mitch Richmond, Webber has combined for 45 points and 27 rebounds, helping Sacramento to a 1-1 start.

Tonight, Webber barely missed a quadruple double, recording eight assists and blocking a career-high nine shots. The nine blocks tied the franchise record, set by Duane Causwell on April 18, 1991.

"I was definitely happy with the way we played but I can improve and get better," Webber said. "We have a lot of guys who can pass and rebound and that makes it much easier for everyone on the team to get involved."

Corliss Williamson added 18 points and Jon Barry scored 15 as the Kings improved to 6-1 against the Grizzlies at home and 9-4 overall. Vlade Divac grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out 10 assists.

"With the schedule we have we had to get this one," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "I thought we did a great job limiting easy baskets and, as you saw, when we got the ball, we were off and running."

Also providing a spark for Sacramento was first-round pick Jason Williams, who scored 13 points and dazzled the sellout crowd with his dribbling and behind-the-back passes. Williams has averaged 17 points in his first two contests while providing much-needed stability at the point guard position.

"This win feels good," Williams said. "The way we played in San Antonio won't cut it. We came home and played hard and now we have to do that every night."

Bryant Reeves, who came into camp overweight and lost his starting job, scored 14 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 12 for the Grizzlies, who were the last team to debut in this abbreviated season.

"They just completely outplayed us tonight," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "I thought we would execute a little better, but that's something we're going to have to work on."

Webber scored 15 points in the first half as Sacramento built a 56-41 lead at intermission. He had five during a 17-4 run to close the half. The Kings shot 58 percent (26-of-45) from the floor in the first 24 minutes while holding Vancouver to 33 percent (16-of-48).

The Kings shot just under 50 percent (48-of-97), a far cry from the 37 percent they shot in Friday's season-opening loss at San Antonio.
