Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 32 points and Moochie Norris added 12 on four key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers, 91-88.

Detlef Schrempf added 12 points for Seattle, which has won its first two games for the first time since opening 10-0 in the 1993-94 season.

Damon Stoudamire had 19 points and Brian Grant added 12 and 11 rebounds for Portland, which dropped its season opener and has lost the last five regular-season meetings with the SuperSonics.

Portland had a 71-61 lead after the third quarter, but Seattle went on a 14-2 run as Norris made three 3-pointers and Schrempf ended the surge with a layup with 9:07 left.

Stoudamire answered with a 3-pointer and Grant sank a short jumper to put Portland ahead, 78-75. Norris' fourth 3-pointer tied it with 7:49 left. Greg Anthony continued the 3-point fest as Portland regained the lead 32 seconds later.

"I felt I was on fire at the beginning of the game. It was like a playground," Norris said. "The fourth quarter was something you dreamed about as a kid. After that first shot, the confidence just jumped up. I just thought, `Give me the ball, I want to shoot it.'"

The 6-1 Norris was a 1996 second-round pick by Milwaukee and played eight games for Vancouver in the 1996-97 season. He spent the last two seasons in the CBA.

"I just want to show the guys I can help them," he added. "I'm just happy to be here."

Hersey Hawkins made his only basket of the game to pull Seattle within 81-80, but Rasheed Wallace answered with a 10-foot jumper. Payton's layup sliced the deficit to one and, after Anthony made one of two free throws, Payton nailed a 26-footer from the left side to give Seattle an 85-84 lead with 3:51 left.

Portland took its last lead on two free throws by Stoudamire with 3:07 left. After back-to-back turnovers, Payton put Seattle in front for good with two free throws.

Stoudamire's drive pulled Portland within 89-88 with 1:15 remaining. After Hawkins missed a 3-pointer, Portland got back the ball with 17.3 seconds left. But Isaiah Rider missed a 17-foot jumper and Schrempf rebounded. Dale Ellis sank two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to seal the win.

"I thought our effort was good tonight, but we have to learn to close a game out," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "It was a little miscommunication at times as far as coverage. They got open shots and we wanted to make them shoot something other than a three. We just did not do good job on defending the pick and roll with Moochie Norris."

Portland took its largest lead at 64-50 when Stoudamire hit a five-foot jumper with 6:28 left in the third quarter. But Payton scored eight of Seattle's final 11 points in the period to cut the margin to 10.

Payton and Norris combined for eight of Seattle's 11 3-pointers and the team shot 46.5 percent (33-of-71) from the field to extend its home winning streak over Portland to seven games, dating to April 17, 1995.

Portland, which made several offseason moves to produce one of the NBA's deeper teams, made only 44 percent (32-of-73) of its shots and committed 16 turnovers.
