Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers led from start to finish in posting their first victory of the season, 87-77 over the Charlotte Hornets.

The Cavaliers, who dropped their first three games for the first time since beginning the 1995-96 season with six losses, raced out to a 30-17 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

Kemp was instrumental on the interior, grabbing four of Cleveland's 12 offensive rebounds and converting 12-of-15 free throws as a result of continually driving strong to the basket.

Bob Sura scored 15 points and Brevin Knight added 14 for the Cavaliers, who shot 46 percent (30-of-65) from the field after connecting on just 41 percent in their previous three contests.

"The difference for us tonight was that we shot (nearly) 50 percent and got some layups," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "Our offensive game came from our defense tonight. They wanted to win badly tonight. Lots of people contributed and that's how you get a win."

"This is only one win," added Knight. "We can't blow this out of proportion. We have to have people continue to step up and make big plays."

Derrick Coleman and David Wesley each scored 16 points for the Hornets, who finished their season-opening four-game homestand at 1-3.

Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half, Charlotte battled back within 74-69 on a nine-foot hook shot by Chucky Brown with 10:10 to play.

But Zydrunas Ilgauskas hit a free throw, Derek Anderson made a follow shot and Sura's driving layup with 6:49 remaining opened a 79-69 bulge and snuffed the rally.

"I'm starting to feel better," said Sura, who is still in the process of recovering from an ankle injury from last season. "I've lost some weight and (I'm) getting in shape. I was able to finish on drives and get to the line. I'm starting to feel like my old self again."

Ilgauskas collected 10 points for the Cavaliers, who held a 37-31 advantage on the boards and used a tenacious defense to force 21 turnovers that were converted into 30 points.

"Tonight turnovers were the difference," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "They got 30 points off 21 turnovers and we still only lost by 10 points. They have two guys that know how to work the paint in Kemp and Ilgauskas."

Bobby Phills scored 12 points and rookie Brad Miller added 10 for the Hornets, who will embark on a four-game road trip beginning Thursday in Atlanta.

Severely undermanned without injured starting forwards Anthony Mason and Glenn Rice, Charlotte shot 47 percent (29-of-62) and grabbed just five offensive rebounds.

J.R. Reid, who has helped pick up the slack, was averaging 13.3 points and six rebounds over the first three games. But the Cavaliers limited Reid to just six points and three rebounds in 25 minutes.

"We're a little shorthanded right now," said Reid. "It takes a great effort every night. There were a lot of mental mistakes. If everyone was healthy, it would be a different story, but there are no excuses."

Coleman dunked to bring the Hornets within 17-13 with 4:40 left in the first period. Cleveland answered with a 13-4 run to end the period capped by Derek Anderson's 18-foot jumper at the buzzer that opened a 30-17 cushion.

Sura drained a pair of free throws to give the Cavaliers their biggest lead of the night, 46-29, with 5:17 left in the first half.

Cleveland will return home for a nine-day, four-game homestand beginning Thursday night against the San Antonio Spurs.
