Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon scored six of his 19 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes and the Houston Rockets defeated the Sacramento Kings for the ninth straight time, 92-82.

Charles Barkley had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Rockets, who allowed only four points over the final 5:35 and won their third straight game following a season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Barkley battled Kings forward Chris Webber to a virtual draw. Webber had another huge game with 21 points and 19 rebounds, falling a rebound shy of his second straight 20-20 game.

"Late in the game they got the rebounds and we made some turnovers and that is a bad combo," Webber said. "We didn't play well in the first half, but we came back and had a chance to win it at the end, but the better team won tonight."

Nursing a swollen knee, Barkley is averaging 20.0 points and 17.5 rebounds in four games. Webber is averaging 24.7 points and 18 rebounds in his last three games.

"My knee is going to be sore, but I am going to put off the surgery if I can," Barkley said. "I made the decision to put it off, so I can't complain about it. I can't do some of the things I want to, but I can still rebound. We are going to play over the next week or so and see how it is."

A hook shot by Webber had the Kings within 84-80 before Olajuwon took over, outscoring Sacramento down the stretch with a pair of baskets and two clinching free throws.

"Tonight Hakeem came up really big," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "He made two big plays in the fourth. He made the jump hook in the lane and the dream shake on the baseline. He was getting his rhythm back. He was aggressive and exploding for the defensive rebound."

Olajuwon made a hook with 3:15 remaining, giving Houston an 86-80 lead. Sacramento's Corliss Williamson scored with 1:30 to go and the Kings won a jump ball. But rookie Predrag Stojakovic missed a 3-pointer, and Olajuwon made a turnaround jumper on the baseline with 31 seconds left. Matt Bullard and Olajuwon each added a pair of free throws.

"Tonight, I didn't have to think. I was moving with no pain," Olajuwon said. "I have to get my confidence back on that shot. I have been working on it over and over in practice."

Olajuwon also pulled down 13 rebounds and shut out Kings center Vlade Divac in the fourth quarter. Divac had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Brent Price scored 16 points and Scottie Pippen and Bullard had 12 apiece for the Rockets, who shot under 41 percent (36-of-88) from the field but held a 52-46 rebounding edge. Pippen also had eight rebounds and seven assists.

"They are a very good team," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "If they stay healthy they will be very good in the second half of the year. Scottie gives them a lot of versatility and Barkley looks as alive as he has been in three years. They have it all there, it is just a matter of them putting it all together."

Williamson and rookie Jason Williams scored 16 points apiece for the Kings, who shot 41 percent (36-of-87), including 2-of-15 from 3-point range. Sacramento has not defeated Houston since April 5, 1996.

"I struggled with my shooting early, but I kept my confidence and made some shots in the third quarter," Williams said. "We don't have any excuses. We came out flat in the first half and you can't do that on the road."

Sacramento's last lead was 76-75 on a 3-pointer by Stojakovic with 7:40 to play. Pippen made two free throws and Barkley had a tip-in with six minutes left. Webber made a jumper, but Barkley dunked and Bullard sank a 3-pointer that gave Houston an 84-78 bulge with 4:25 remaining.

Olajuwon scored eight points and Barkley and Pippen added eight apiece as the Rockets raced to a 51-42 halftime lead. Sacramento stormed back in the third quarter as Houston went cold.

"We jumped on them in the third quarter and that gave us a chance to win it in the fourth," Adelman said. "We just didn't come through when we had to."

A jumper by Williams gave the Kings a 65-58 lead with 3:20 to play before Price made two 3-pointers in an 8-0 burst, including one with the shot clock winding down, as the Rockets regained the lead.

"I was just trying to beat the shot clock and I am not afraid to say it was a bit of luck," Price said. "It gave us some momentum. I hit the next 3 and that seemed to turn it around for us."
