Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway and Terry Porter combined for 21 points in the third quarter as the Miami Heat won for the first time in three tries at home this season with a 102-84 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

After rookie Vince Carter sank a pair of free throws to give the Raptors a 52-49 lead with 7:46 remaining in the third period, Hardaway scored five straight points to give Miami a two-point lead.

Doug Christie hit a jumper to knot the score before Hardaway, who scored 13 points in the period, converted a three-point play and a jumper to put the Heat ahead for good at 59-54 with 5:38 left.

Hardaway finished with 27 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Alonzo Mourning added 18 points to lead the Heat, who have won six in a row and 10 of 12 all-time meetings with Toronto.

"They made some shots, some tough shots. But I got us going and made some pivotal shots in the third quarter," Hardaway said. "They doubled up on me and we made things happen."

Christie led the Toronto with 20 points. He hit two straight baskets to bring the Raptors within 59-58 but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Mark Strickland made a three-point play, fueling a 15-3 spurt to close the quarter and give the Heat a 74-61 advantage heading into the final period. Porter made a pair of 3-pointers and had eight of his 15 points in the decisive burst.

"It feels a lot better. We got some great performances off the bench," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Tim was great and Alonzo was solid. The key point is when we were down 49-42 early in the third. Mark came in and gave us all kinds of energy."

Dee Brown contributed 16 points off the bench for Toronto, which has dropped three straight after a season-opening win at Boston.

The Raptors drew within 80-72 with 8:15 remaining when Brown hit a 3-pointer, but Miami answered as Mourning hit two free throws and Clarence Weatherspoon converted a three-point play for a 13-point lead with 6:11 remaining.

Signed as a free agent to add scoring off the bench, Porter made 5-of-9 shots, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He scored in double figures for the third straight game.

With the Raptors leading 34-30 in the second quarter, Hardaway sank a 3-pointer to trigger a run of 10 points. Mourning hit a jumper and P.J. Brown had two baskets before Mourning hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Heat their biggest lead of the half at 40-34 with 2:58 to play.

Toronto rallied with an 11-2 surge to close the half and take a 45-42 lead. Carter, coming off a 22-point game, scored four of his seven points in the spurt.

Weatherspoon added 12 points and Strickland 10 for the Miami reserves that outscored Toronto's bench, 41-36. Tracy McGrady scored 10 for Toronto.

"The difference in the game was Strickland," Dee Brown said. "He just works so hard. He was able to come off the bench and get them out of their funk."

Each team will have some time off before enduring a busy stretch in its schedules. The Raptors have four days of rest before playing eight times in 13 days, while Miami has three days off before a stretch of eight games in 14 days.
