Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Who says Utah is too old for the compressed 50-game schedule?

Karl Malone had 22 points and nine rebounds as the Utah Jazz improved to 4-0 for the first time in franchise history with an 82-74 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Malone, who has led Utah in scoring in all four games this season, hit an 18-footer to give the Jazz a 78-69 lead with 4:16 left. Jeff Hornacek added a layup to make it 82-72 with 2:31 to go.

"We played terrible, probably the worst game of the season," Malone said. "The thing I'm most impressed about is we did play terrible and we got a win. The neat thing was down the stretch everybody did something. That was was key."

Utah has allowed an average of just 39.5 points in the second half this season, giving up only 35 to the Suns. The Jazz outscored Phoenix 20-17 in the third quarter to build a 63-56 advantage.

Utah backup center Todd Fuller added 12 points in place of Greg Ostertag, who sat out with the flu. Hornacek added 11 points.

But coach Jerry Sloan was unhappy with the effort, feeling the Jazz are not getting contributions from enough players.

"This was one of our poorer efforts as far as our team is concerned," Sloan said. "We've got to have everyone playing well. We can't win with just one or two guys."

Phoenix would love to have Utah's problems. The Suns shot just 37 percent from the field and the 74 points matched the fourth-lowest total in franchise history.

"They definitely have an advantage," Phoenix forward Tom Gugliotta said. "They have their core players back and their role players know what to do. We're not clicking on all cylinders."

Gugliotta collected 18 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, but was just 5-of-12 from the field. Jason Kidd added 11 points for the Suns, who made just 3-of-19 shots in the third quarter and did not score a basket in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the period.

Phoenix has dropped two straight after opening the season with a pair of victories.

"That was a tough loss," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "I thought we played hard enough to win. We didn't shoot the ball well enough. Our perimeter guys could not buy a basket from the outside."

Phoenix scored the first two baskets of the game and took its final lead at 8-6 on Kidd's jumper with 8:33 remaining in the opening quarter. A 24-10 run gave the Jazz a 30-18 lead after the opening period.

Kidd hit two foul shots and a layup to pull Phoenix within 41-39, before Malone closed the half with a pair from the line. Malone is averaging 25.5 points, scoring at least 21 in every game.

After George McCloud hit two foul shots to pull Phoenix within 49-48, Malone and Fuller hit jumpers to give the Jazz a 53-48 lead. Luc Longley's dunk made it 53-50 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter, but the Suns managed just three foul shots for the remainder of the period.

Malone hit a 13-footer to cap a 6-0 spurt, staking the Jazz to a 59-50 advantage with 3:22 remaining.

"We had moments where we played good defense," Utah guard John Stockton said. "We were able to get ourselves a little lead. We tried to make them work defensively, but we still know we have to get better, a lot better. You've got to expect wrinkles right now."

Utah has won 11 of the last 14 meetings against Phoenix, including seven of eight since the 1996-97 season.
