Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Karl Malone has had some of his biggest games against the Golden State Warriors. Tonight was no exception.

Malone, who averaged 31 points against the Warriors last season, scored 35 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the unbeaten Utah Jazz to a 97-81 win over winless Golden State.

Malone shot 13-of-19 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line helping Utah to its best start (5-0) in franchise history. The Jazz also posted their ninth straight win over the Warriors and fifth in a row on Golden State's homecourt.

"They played him (Malone) one-on-one and he's going to score," Jazz guard Jeff Hornacek said. "He is going to go to town on any team that does that. We don't care about getting respect from other teams or the media. We just go out and play the game and when the end of the season comes along we are usually near the top."

This was Utah's first game against the Warriors since Malone torched them for 56 points, including the game-winning basket in the closing seconds, on April 7.

"He's our guy," John Stockton said referring to Malone. "There is no secret about that. Everyone plays off of him and in turn, he plays off of them. We're going to get better. We're not playing well right now. It's expected of us to be better."

Malone scored seven points during a 9-0 third-quarter run that put Utah ahead 58-45 with 7:22 remaining. The spurt was punctuated when Malone dunked emphatically over Adonal Foyle, drawing a foul. Malone, who had 18 points in the period, flexed his right bicep, drawing boos from the Oakland Coliseum Arena crowd.

"It surpised me they came out talking to me and talking (trash)," Malone said. "They had it coming once they started talking that way to me and I turned it on."

"The fact of the matter is that Utah whines more than any team I've ever played against," Warriors forward Terry Cummings said. "I don't have any respect for anyone who whines on one end and then on the other wants every break in the game."

Golden State tried to make a game of it cutting the lead to 81-72 with 5:35 to play. But an 8-0 run over the next two minutes put the contest out of reach as Malone and Shandon Anderson scored four points apiece during that stretch.

Cummings and Tony Delk scored 16 points apiece but the Warriors fell to 0-5, four losses short of last year's dismal start. Golden State also dropped to 0-4 at home, while the Jazz moved to 4-0 on the road, equaling their best start away from home.
