Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Just when the Phoenix Suns appeared to be headed for another loss, Rex Chapman found his shooting stroke.

Chapman overcame an awful start and scored 12 of his season-high 23 points in overtime, lifting the Suns to a 107-104 victory over the winless Los Angeles Clippers.

After Phoenix blew a nine-point lead in the final four minutes of regulation, the streaky shooting guard scored the first seven points of the extra session to give the Suns the lead for good. He made 5-of-7 free throws in the final 29 seconds to seal the win.

"I've always found it easier to shoot and score at the end of games like that," Chapman said. "At that point in the game, you're not thinking of your shot or yourself, you're just thinking about whatever you can do to win."

Clifford Robinson scored 23 points and Tom Gugliotta added 20 and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who had lost their last two games but beat the Clippers for the second time this season.

"I thought that was a game that you just hope you can win," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "Our team has been struggling with confidence and I know this is a team we're supposed to beat. I hope this will help. We shot the ball well from the outside. They were a tough match for us on the inside."

"It's a good win for us after the last two we had," Robinson said. "We thought we had them in regulation, but they stayed with it and in overtime we made a few more plays."

Lamond Murray scored 26 points and Maurice Taylor added 25 for the Clippers, who fell to 0-4 under new coach Chris Ford and are one of two winless teams in the NBA. Los Angeles suffered a 101-92 loss to Phoenix in its season opener.

"We hung tough throughout the whole game," Ford said. "We were able to make the comeback at the end of the fourth and even though we fell behind in the overtime, we made another surge. It's just the little things right now, the turnovers and shot selection. Those things can be corrected. There were a lot of positives."

Chapman missed his first eight shots and was 2-of-13 in the first half, which ended with the Clippers holding a 45-44 lead. He was not much of a factor in the second half but took charge in overtime.

He made a tough running jumper along the left baseline and added a pair of free throws with 3:48 to go. His 3-pointer with 2:39 left gave Phoenix a 100-93 lead.

The Clippers answered with two free throws by Taylor and a 3-pointer by James Robinson, but Gugliotta made a left-handed runner in the lane for a 102-98 lead with 1:22 remaining.

After a basket by Sherman Douglas, the Clippers were whistled for illegal defense with 29 seconds left. Chapman made the technical foul shot, then added another free throw two seconds later for a 104-100 advantage. He made three more free throws in the waning seconds and Jason Kidd wrapped it up with a steal just before the buzzer.

Kidd had 14 points and 16 assists for the Suns, who shot 47 percent (37-of-78) from the field as they beat the Clippers for the sixth straight time. Chapman made 7-of-22 shots.

"It's been a tough time," Chapman said. "I don't know if you can call 7-for-35 or whatever it was getting out of a slump. But it felt good down the stretch to be able to help."

A basket by Douglas gave Los Angeles a 71-69 early in the fourth quarter before Clifford Robinson scored seven points in a 9-1 burst, including a tip-in that gave Phoenix a 78-72 lead with 9:14 remaining.

Robinson's free throw pushed the advantage to 91-82 with 3:41 left before the Clippers rallied, closing the quarter with an 11-2 run. Taylor scored six points and had a chance to give Los Angeles the lead when he went to the line with 11 seconds left. He made the first to tie it and missed the second, but hustled back on defense and blocked Robinson's potential winning layup.

"It was a fast break, we tried to convert," Clifford Robinson said. "But Taylor made a good block. He did a good job in getting back after he missed the free throw."

"Taylor was huge," Ainge said. "We didn't have an answer for him in the left post."

James Robinson scored 15 points and Douglas and rookie Michael Olowokandi added nine apiece for the Clippers, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and made 9-of-21 3-pointers.

"I think every game we are closer and closer to becoming the team we want to be," Taylor said. "We just started making so many mental errors down the stretch. We've got to keep doing the things that we were doing when we were coming back."

The Suns had lost their last three overtime games. The Clippers are 0-4 for the first time since the 1994-95 season, when they lost their first 16.
