Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Chris Mills sank a 3-pointer to force a second overtime, then sealed the Golden State Warriors' first victory of the season by grabbing a key rebound in a 105-100 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Golden State, which had opened the season with five straight losses, was in danger of losing again before Mills and veteran Terry Cummings came up with a series of clutch plays down the stretch.

The Warriors trailed 94-91 with 18 seconds left in the first overtime and Tony Delk missed a long 3-pointer. Cummings ran down the rebound and penetrated into the lane before finding a wide-open Mills in the right corner. After Mills drained the tying 3-pointer, Isaiah Rider missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.

"I knew we needed a 3-point shot," Mills said. "He drove the baseline so I made sure I flooded the opposite baseline and got the shot off in time. I did want it. I saw my guy turn his head and I was able to get open Cummings, like the veteran he is found me open."

"That was the shot that got us there," said Cummings of Mills' clutch jumper.

In the second overtime, Cummings gave Golden State a 102-98 lead by sinking two free throws with 62 seconds to go. Former Warrior Jimmy Jackson countered with a pair and Delk missed another 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. But Rasheed Wallace missed a jumper and Mills grabbed the rebound.

Cummings scored 24 points and John Starks added 18 before fouling out. Cummings, Mills and Starks all were acquired in the trade that sent Latrell Sprewell to the New York Knicks. Last season, the Warriors opened with nine straight losses.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 23 points and 17 rebounds and Damon Stoudamire added 18 for Portland, which has split its opening four contests.

"For me, it is better to make two points and win," Sabonis said. "I missed that free throw, normally in practice I shoot good, but in games I don't know."

"We didn't have it," said Stoudamire. "We didn't play a good game. Embarrassed isn't the word, it is kind of a setback. We are predictable, it's boring. We are going through the motions."

Golden State led 86-83 with 1:56 left in regulation following Cummings' two free throws. Wallace countered with a 12-foot jumper 11 seconds later to get Portland within a point.

The teams traded empty possessions down the stretch until Sabonis was fouled with 4.8 seconds left. He hit the first free throw but missed the second. Mills got the rebound but a turnover on the offensive end led to overtime.

Erick Dampier led a huge effort for the Warriors on the boards with 15 rebounds. Donyell Marshall added 14 points and nine rebounds and talked about the importance of hitting the boards.

"One of our strengths is rebounding," Marshall said. "We just go to the boards and do what we have to do. We were getting killed earlier tonight but P.J. (Carlesimo) said once we start rebounding we can get back in the game."

Portland's starting backcourt of Rider and Stoudamire combined to shoot 12-of-29 and committed seven turnovers. The starting frontcourt of Grant and Williams was even worse, combining to shoot 5-of-19, grabbing nine boards and recording three assists.

For the game the Trail Blazers shot just 40 percent (36-of-90).
