Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson found his shot just in time for the Philadelphia 76ers.

After contributing to his team's scoreless streak of nearly five minutes with six straight misses, Iverson made a high-arcing 12-footer from the left baseline with 1:09 remaining to seal a 78-70 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Iverson scored 23 of his 32 points in the first half, when the 76ers led by as many as 16 points. He turned an ankle in the third quarter but remained in the game and finished 11-of-23 from the field.

Coming off a 46-point performance in a loss to San Antonio on Friday, Iverson again got off to a quick start. But he cooled off after twisting his left ankle on a three-point play that gave Philadelphia its largest lead at 59-42 with 5:04 left in the third quarter.

Atlanta cut the deficit to 72-64 on a 3-pointer by Ed Gray with 5:46 remaining. But the Hawks had a scoreless drought of their own, going more than four minutes before a pair of inside hoops by Dikembe Mutombo made it a four-point game.

Iverson got loose along the baseline and Eric Snow and Iverson each made two free throws to offset a jumper by Mookie Blaylock, who had 10 points and seven assists. Iverson was 10-of-10 from the line.

"We just wanted to go out there and make things happen defensively," Iverson said. "We didn't want to rush and try to blow them out, but we did try to protect the lead once we got it. We played like that through most of the game. In the end we fell off, but we regrouped."

The points allowed represented the best defensive effort in the First Union Center by the Sixers, who improved to 4-1 and beat the Hawks for just the fourth time in 22 meetings.

"We're not going to win all these games," Iverson admitted. "Guys in this league are so talented and some nights we won't be able to throw a rock in the ocean or we won't be able to stop people," Iverson added. "So it's important that we get games aat home."

Matt Geiger contributed 11 points and some physical play for the Sixers, who shot under 38 percent (25-of-66) but held the Hawks to 34 percent (26-of-76).

"We had lapses offensively, but we played so well defensively it kept us in the game," Geiger said. "We played our good `D' and Allen led us offensively. That's going to be a characteristic of this team all year -- play solid `D' and have Allen lead the way."

Steve Smith scored 14 points and Alan Henderson 12 for Atlanta (4-2), which was outrebounded 40-38.

"This is the first bad game we've really played," Smith said. "I hope it's the last one. ... We couldn't get it going until the fourth quarter. We made a run but it was a little too late."

In the third quarter, Mutombo was knocked to the floor and remained there several minutes after taking an indavertent elbow to the eye from Sixers forward Theo Ratliff. Geiger and Hawks forward LaPhonso Ellis had a brief shoving match seconds later.

Iverson and George Lynch scored four points apiece in a 12-3 run that gave the Sixers the lead for good at 14-7 midway through the opening period.

The Hawks closed to 16-13 on a free throw by Mutombo before Iverson scored all Philadelphia's points in a quarter-ending 9-2 burst. He made a pair of mid-range jumpers before stealing a pass and turning it into a three-point play. He added a pair of foul shots to give the Sixers a 25-15 lead after one period.

"We didn't play well at all," Henderson said. "We came out flat. We just didn't come out with as much intensity as it takes to play a team like that."

Iverson took a brief break in the second quarter but upon his return made two free throws and a jumper to extend the advantage to 38-22 with 5:32 left. The Sixers held a 44-32 halftime lead.
