Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Beginning with this year, Kevin Garnett will make an average of $21 million over the next six seasons. The Los Angeles Clippers found out why tonight.

Garnett scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Los Angeles Clippers for the eighth straight time, 95-73.

The Timberwolves' 4-1 record matches the best start in franchise history, established last season.

Minnesota put the contest out of reach with a 12-2 third-quarter run, opening a 73-53 advantage with 34 seconds left. Garnett scored six of his 12 points in the quarter during that spurt, including a thunderous dunk to close it.

"I was trying to make the boos into cheers tonight," Garnett said. "I've had some memorable moments here in this building, but at the same time it will be nice if there is some hot water in the shower."

The Clippers missed eight consecutive shots over a 5:34 stretch and connected on 8-of-20 shots in the period. They shot 37 percent (29-of-78) overall, including 1-of-14 from 3-point range.

"I'm pleased we are 4-1, but I'm more pleased with our ability to defense people," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We've been pretty good defensively no matter who we play. It was the type of game coaches love when everyone is a contributing factor."

Minnesota took the lead for good with an 11-1 run in the second quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a 39-30 advantage with five minutes remaining. Bobby Jackson scored four points during that spurt.

Joe Smith scored 14 points, Stephon Marbury netted 13 and Anthony Peeler 12 as the Timberwolves began a stretch of six games in nine days. It was Peeler's first game back in the lineup after missing the last two outings with a sore left knee.

"I feel good," Peeler said. "I had a few practices with these guys yesterday. It's not hard coming in playing with these guys because they make my job easier. I've got to go out there and play tough defense and knock down the open jumper."

Maurice Taylor scored 19 points and Lamond Murray added 12 for the Clippers (0-5), who are still 11 losses short of the worst start in franchise history. This contest began a three-game homestand for Los Angeles.

"We were definitly sluggish, but we need to accept the challenge and take care of business every night," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "We need to believe in one another."
