Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Arvydas Sabonis scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out a career-high nine assists as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth straight time, 99-84.
Rasheed Wallace added 15 points as Portland posted its third win in its last four outings and improved to 2-0 at the Rose Garden. The Trail Blazers have won seven straight against the Mavericks in Portland.
Portland used an 11-3 run at the end of the first quarter to seize a 31-18 advantage. Damon Stoudamire had four points during the run while Isaiah Rider had eight in the quarter.
"It was a terrible start." Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We shot ourselves in the foot, and then had to work like heck to get back in the game."
The Trail Blazers poured it on in the second quarter when a 10-2 spurt gave them a 41-22 advantage. Jim Jackson scored all six of his first-half points in that run.
"I wasn't pleased with the way we played in the second half," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We just weren't ready in the second half, but the first five minutes of the second half are really important. They're an explosive team and you've got to take them seriously."
"We didn't play well, but we won the game," Stoudamire said. "That's all that counts. We've got to play our second half as well as we played the first half. If we did that, we'd be 5-0 right now."
Dallas tried to make a game of it, pulling within 73-65 with 9:16 remaining following a 7-0 run. Steve Nash had five points in the burst.
The Mavericks were within 88-80 with 2:43 remaining, but eight straight points by the Trail Blazers in just over two minutes gave Portland a comfortable 16-point advantage. Walt Williams scored the first five points of that spurt.
"We had two weeks of practices before we saw what was going to happen in a game, and then it's like wildfire," Nash said. "The bottom line is that we've got to compete, talk and communicate defensively and offensively."
Michael Finley scored 21 points and Nash added 19 as Dallas dropped its fifth straight outing. The Mavericks are 1-4 on the road in this abbreviated season and still have four games remaining on a seven-game road trip.
