Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored 17 points and Alan Henderson added 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks won for the second time in eight days at Chicago, defeating the Bulls, 83-67.

Atlanta, which has won three of its last four games, improved its road record to 2-2. The Hawks have lost at Philadelphia and New Jersey by a combined 18 points, but their two wins at Chicago have been by a total of 32 points.

Grant Long scored four points in an 11-0 spurt in the second quarter as the Hawks opened a 45-34 lead with 1:55 left. Atlanta led 47-36 at halftime, with Henderson and Smith leading the way with nine apiece.

"We didn't get out to a quick start like we did in the first game," Henderson said. "They're a decent club and a lot better than people give them credit for being. The difference is that we're starting to come around as a team."

Chicago closed within 72-66 at the 6:34 mark on a jump shot by Andrew Lang, but did not hit a field goal the rest of the way, shooting 0-for-11. Ron Harper's free throw 34 seconds later was the last point for the Bulls.

"Everyone is struggling now," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. Check the stats and you'll see there are a lot of teams shooting poorly. I've said all along, give everyone 15 games and see the change."

Chicago, which sports the league's worst offense, shot 33 percent (27-of-83) from the floor and 2-of-19 from 3-point range. The Bulls are averaging 70.5 points per game in their last four outings and have been held under 70 points in two of their last three contests. Chicago also is avergaing 12.5 points in the fourth quarter the last four games.

"We are improving," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "I think we were better against them this time. Toni Kukoc was outstanding. He rebounded, he penetrated and he shot better. It is tough when you are trying to win and trying to get minutes for the younger players."

"I think we are not moving the ball well, especially in the fourth quarter," Kukoc said. "We have to watch the game films to see what we can do to change that."

Kukoc finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Brent Barry added 10 for the Bulls, who have lost four in a row for the first time since January 13-18, 1995, when they also were without Michael Jordan.

Chicago's 1-5 start is its worst in 20 years.
