Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn scored a career-high 35 points as the New Jersey Nets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 97-82 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Van Horn led five players in double figures, helping the Nets break open a close game in the second half. Kerry Kittles added 15 points, while Eric Murdock chipped in with 13.

"Obviously, in terms of confidence it was a big builder and it's always nice to stop the bleeding," Van Horn. "Losing three games in a row is tough and the earlier you can stop it, the better it is for your team and for your confidence level."

The second-year player out of Utah Horn was 11-of-18 from the field and 12-of-13 from the line. His previous career best was 33 points against the Toronto Raptors last April 12.

Jayson Williams set the key to his teammate's success is to simply leave him alone.

"I told you all season if you get him the ball and the coaching staff and everybody else quits pressing him to make him do things that he's uncomfortable doing, that he's the best player I've ever played with besides Michael Jordan in the All-Star game," Williams said.

"Keith Van Horn is a hell of a basketball player," added Pistons coach Alvin Gentry, who was ejected with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter after picking up two quick technical fouls. "He's a great basketball player. He's got a chance to be an elite player in this league."

Damon Jones, who was called up from the CBA on Monday, netted 10 points off the bench, all in the fourth quarter. He personally accounted for an 8-2 Nets' run that provided a 77-64 lead early in the fourth quarter. New Jersey took its biggest lead at 94-74 on a jumper with two minutes remaining by Kendall Gill, who had 11 points.

Grant Hill had 22 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 15 for the Pistons, who have dropped four straight. Stackhouse scored only four points in the second half.

The Pistons led 48-46 at halftime but were outscored 23-14 in the third period and held to 34 points in the second half. Detroit has averaged just 75.5 points in its last two contests, losing to the New York Knicks, 78-69, on Monday.

The Pistons host Miami on Wednesday for their third game in as many days. They have not had a lot of practice time, but Hill refused to use that as an excuse.

"We're professionals, we're paid," he said. "I don't care if it's a 10-game season we should come out a play hard every night. I thought we played a little harder tonight at times, but we just didn't get it done. Right know we're searching and I don't pretend to have any answers."

Sam Cassell missed his fifth straight game for the Nets with a right ankle injury, while the Pistons were without Joe Dumars and Lindsey Hunter. Dumars sat out with a right hamstring pull and Hunter missed the contest due to the flu.

After 11 lead changes in the first half, the Nets took control early in the first quarter, taking the lead for good at 52-50 on Murdock's 3-pointer with 10:17 remaining.

New Jersey ripped off a 14-4 spurt to extend its lead to 69-55 on Murdock's 17-footer with 4:11 left in the period. Detroit scored the final seven points of the quarter, but Jones took over at the outset of the final period.

New Jersey shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from the field in the fourth quarter while holding the Pistons to just 37 percent (7-of-19). Detroit came no closer than 12 in the final seven minutes.
