Game Story

INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers handed the Dallas Mavericks their 15th consecutive setback at the Great Western Forum, 101-88.

Kobe Bryant continued his sparkling play with 23 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who have won their last 14 meetings with the Mavericks dating to April 5, 1995. Dallas has not won at the Forum since December 12, 1990.

"We knew it was going to be a hard start out here on the road with this young team," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We were prepared for it. I don't want them to get down. I think they need to do some soul searching. The Lakers are good, very good. Let's just hope they don't get (Dennis) Rodman."

O'Neal snapped a 6-6 tie with a ferocious slam that triggered a 7-0 spurt. He capped the run with a layup for a 13-6 lead with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

"Nobody's an even match on me down there," said O'Neal, who was guarded by Ex-Laker A.C. Green in the early going. "I don't care who it is. One-on-one, that's my rent money down there. I can't let anybody take my rent money."

Starting point guard Derek Fisher had his best performance of the young season with 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. He scored six points during a 16-3 spurt that gave Los Angles a commanding 52-33 lead with 2:25 remaining in the first half.

"Fisher got off to a terrible start, but to his credit, he came back and played a nice ballgame," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said.

Eddie Jones scored 20 points for Los Angeles, which has posted back-to-back victories after a two-game losing skid. The Lakers once again were without forward Robert Horry, who missed his third straight game due to an irregular heartbeat. Horry will undergo further evaluation Thursday and may be available for Friday's home game against the San Antonio Spurs.

"We did some good things," said Jones. "But we did a lot of bad things there at the end. We're a team that should have finished them off and won the game by 30 (points)."

Gary Trent came off the bench to score 15 points for Dallas, which has lost six straight games for the first time since February 15-26, 1998.

"We're all new to each other," said Dallas point guard Steve Nash, who managed just four points in 27 minutes. "We're young and we really only had two weeks of practice. Getting thrown into the fire like this, we're not really prepared for the adversity that we've faced so far. We really don't know each other in this room so we're still tryng to find ourselves."

Michael Finley scored 12 points and Cedric Ceballos added 11 for the Mavs, who are 0-4 on their five-game road trip and have just one victory this season, a 102-99 double-overtime decision at Golden State on February 7.

Jones' layup with 1:27 left in the third quarter gave Los Angeles its biggest lead at 84-57. But Dallas showed some feistiness dwon the stretch, including a 7-0 fourth-quarter run capped by Hubert Davis' 3-pointer that cut the deficit to 96-84 with 3:15 to play.

"We're glad to get the win," added Harris. "We did some good things for three quarters, then kind of played fat-cat ball in the last quarter. It happens sometimes with a 25-point lead, but you never like it."

The Lakers shot 45 percent (39-of-86) from the field and held a 48-40 advantage on the boards. Los Angeles scored 21 points off 14 turnovers and outscored Dallas, 14-4, in second-chance points.

Robert Pack scored 10 points and Shawn Bradley blocked five shots for the Mavericks, who shot 45 percent (39-of-86) but were just 9-of-18 from the line.

O'Neal, who played just 27 minutes, was 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 at the stripe for the Lakers, who converted 19-of-26 free throws.

"When we're up by 20-25 points in the fourth quarter, I'll chill," added O'Neal. "It's a long season. The guys have got to do a better job of holding the lead. They almost had to put the black Superman back in there."

Rick Fox followed Tuesday's season-high 20-point effort with a woeful 1-of-8, two-point performance tonight.
