Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets have gotten off to a slow start this season. Tonight was no exception.

The Nuggets went scoreless for almost the first four minutes and never recovered in a 100-85 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, losing for the seventh time in eight games.

Isaiah Rider scored 19 points to lead all five starters in double figures for the Trail Blazers, who somehow handed Denver two of its 11 wins in the 1997-98 campaign. Rider also added eight rebounds and six assists.

"J.R. played a great game," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He made the extra pass. He made the shots and he got rebounds. This was as good a decision-making game I've ever seen him play."

"I think I made some good decisions," Rider said. "I'm trying to do things differently. ... As a team, everyone was making good decisions. I think it kind of rubbed off on each other."

Despite a major overhaul of management, coaches and players, the Nuggets are nearly as bad as last season. They are allowing 105.9 points per game, four more than the next worst defensive team. They are 24th in the league in shooting percentage.

"We're looking to find some defense," Denver coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Our guys need to hang in there and play hard. We'll figure it out."

Portland center Arvydas Sabonis did not start because Dunleavy wanted to rest him and Rasheed Wallace moved into the pivot and scored 18 points. Walt Williams added 17 points and keyed the Blazers' quick start.

Damon Stoudamire opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Wallace added a fast-break dunk. Williams hit two 3-pointers to make it 13-0 just 3:20 in the game.

"The first four minutes, I don't know," said D'Antoni, whose team blew a 19-point first-half lead and lost to Phoenix on Tuesday. "We were behind on every ball. We were dead."

The Nuggets finally scored with 8:12 left in the first quarter on a layup by rookie Raef LaFrentz, who had 17 points and 15 rebounds. Portland continued to pour it on and opened a 25-8 lead on Rider's inside basket with 4:29 remaining.

Williams scored nine points in the first quarter, which ended with the Blazers holding a 31-17 lead. There was no relenting in the second quarter and two free throws by Rider built the lead to 50-28 with 3:22 to go before halftime.

Portland led 58-36 at the half, shooting 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field while holding Denver under 31 percent (12-of-39).

A short jumper by Jermaine O'Neal gave Portland its largest lead at 83-54 with 2:45 left in the third quarter. A free throw by rookie Keon Clark pulled Denver within 90-79 with 5:52 left, but Sabonis answered with a layup and the Blazers led by double figures the rest of the way.

"We're still working on that masterpiece," Dunleavy said. "The good news is we went a full three quarters this time. I really liked the way we started the game, the way we played the whole first half and I liked our energy in the third quarter."

Brian Grant had 12 points and 17 rebounds and Stoudamire added 11 points for the Blazers, who shot 48 percent (41-of-85), including 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Williams was 5-of-6 from long range.

"J.R. did a great job of spreading the defense on the weak side so it allowed me to have open shots," Williams said.

Antonio McDyess had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Nuggets, who shot just 36 percent (28-of-77), including 1-of-14 from 3-point range.

"No energy in the first half as a team," McDyess said. "By the time we started to play defense, it was too late."
