Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- You would think having two days off would give the San Antonio Spurs enough energy to hold off a Phoenix Suns squad playing its third game in as many nights. Think again.

Tom Gugliotta scored 19 points and hit the go-ahead basket with 2:42 remaining as the Suns dominated the fourth quarter and rallied past the Spurs, 79-76.

Jason Kidd posted his second triple-double of the season and 21st career with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for Phoenix, which outscored San Antonio 22-8 over the final 12 minutes to finish the three-day stretch at 2-1.

"I just said to myself when the second half started, `I've got 24 minutes left on this road trip and I'm going to leave it all on the floor. They can carry me to the airplane,'" said Kidd.

"He's a warrior," added Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "A guy that wants the ball in the clutch and he got it. A triple-double is awesome but the boxscore doesn't really tell you what Jason does for our team."

The Spurs held a 68-55 lead in the waning moments of the third quarter before Gugliotta drained a 15-footer as the buzzer sounded, sparking a 20-7 run that pulled the Suns even at 75-75 with just over three minutes to go.

Tim Duncan made a free throw on San Antonio's ensuing trip but Kidd penetrated before finding Gugliotta on the left sideline for a 16-footer that put Phoenix ahead for good, 77-76.

George McCloud sank a jumper off another feed from Kidd with 2:02 remaining to cap the scoring.

"We tightened up on defense and they stopped hitting their shots," said Gugliotta. "Then we got some good, quick transition baskets. They lost all their momentum."

Both teams were futile down the stretch. Phoenix turned it over on shot-clock violations on consecutive trips and the Spurs misfired on a pair of potential tying 3-pointers in the waning moments.

David Robinson had the last chance with three seconds remaining, but the shot hit the front rim and fell into the hands of Kidd, who led Phoenix to its third victory in four games.

"It was designed to go to Mario (Elie), Steve (Kerr) or Sean (Elliott)," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was a last-ditch play at the end of the game and it rarely ends up with the guy it was intended for."

The win also served as a modest measure of revenge for the Suns, who dropped a first-round playoff series to the Spurs last year.

Duncan scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Robinson added 16 and nine for the Spurs, who had a modest two-game winning streak snapped.

"We didn't finish the game," Duncan said. "We had them going down the stretch. They made some shots, got their confidence going and took it from there."

McCloud scored 14 points and Luc Longley and Rex Chapman added 10 apiece for the Suns, who shot 40 percent (32-of-80) from the field and forced 17 turnovers.

Elliott scored 12 points for San Antonio, which also shot 40 percent (29-of-71) but was just 14-of-24 from the line.

"Neither team shot well from the outside tonight," added Ainge. "In the past, when we haven't shot well from the perimeter, we've had a hard time winning games. That's one of the things that's so encouraging about this win."

Danny Manning had a rough game for Phoenix, managing just two points on 0-of-3 shooting before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix's Chris Morris sank a 3-pointer with 6:08 to play that cut the deficit to 72-68. After Robinson hit a free throw, Longley nailed a 14-foot jumper in the lane that made it 73-70 with 5:40 left.

Kidd's 17-footer pulled Phoenix within one and Gugliotta's free throw tied it at 73-73 with 4:07 remaining.

Kidd gave the Suns their first lead since the first quarter with a 14-footer moments later, but Robinson responded with a thunderous slam with 3:11 to play that knotted the contest at 75-75.
