Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Reserve Darrell Armstrong and rookie Michael Doleac led a fourth-quarter surge as the Orlando Magic remained unbeaten at home with a 96-85 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Armstrong, the backup point guard behind star Penny Hardaway, scored nine of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and helped slow down Wizards star guard Rod Strickland. He also handed out eight assists.

"Darrell Armstrong probably played his best game of the year," Magic coach Chuck Daly said.

"He made some pretty good shots, pretty tough shots," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said.

The 6-10 Doleac, one of Orlando's three 1998 first-round picks, scored eight of his season-high 16 points in the final period, most of them on medium-range jumpers. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

"I think they took Doleac a little too light," Magic guard Nick Anderson said. "I mean, he's a rookie -- what's he going to do? He's got the softest shot that you want to have."

"He didn't play like a rookie tonight," Magic forward Horace Grant said. "He played like he knew what he was doing when he shot the ball."

Nick Anderson scored 26 points to lead the Magic, who bounced back from Tuesday's loss at Cleveland and improved to 4-0 at home.

Orlando (6-2) remained atop the Atlantic Division despite another bad game by Hardaway, who scored just four points on 2-of-11 shooting. He was 4-of-15 in the loss to Cleveland.

"I'm shooting the ball the way I want. It's just not going in," Hardaway said. "I'm in a terrible slump."

Juwan Howard scored 15 points and Strickland and Tracy Murray added 14 apiece for the Wizards, who lost their third straight game. Washington has dropped four of the last five meetings with Orlando.

"We just got our (behinds) kicked, period," Strickland said. "They outplayed us and out-executed and out-hustled us."

Two free throws by Strickland in the final second of the third quarter gave the Wizards a 65-63 lead before Armstrong opened the fourth period with a driving three-point play that started a 7-0 run. Short jumpers by Doleac and Armstrong extended the margin to 70-65 with 10:38 left.

A slam by rookie Jahidi White pulled Washington within 74-69 just over two minutes later, but Orlando sealed matters with a 13-4 burst. Doleac had consecutive jumpers and Armstrong made a 16-footer and a steal to set up Derek Strong for a dunk.

"You can't leave him open," Grant said of Doleac. "He's going to hit that little 15-, 16-foot jump shot."

Anderson, who started the spurt with an 18-footer, capped it with a 3-pointer to give the Magic their largest lead at 87-73 with four minutes to go.

Bo Outlaw had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Horace Grant added 11 and 11 for the Magic, who shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82) from the field and held a 46-42 rebounding edge. Orlando's reserves held a 39-31 scoring edge over Washington's.

"Our bench, y'all think they're impressive?" Outlaw said. "Y'all don't know what they can do."

Strickland had 10 assists but also committed eight turnovers. Backcourt mate Mitch Richmond shot just 5-of-17 and scored 13 points for the Wizards, who shot 43 percent (36-of-83) and were outscored 24-9 at the line.

"This was a game that we played three quarters and not four," Richmond said. "It is very frustrating because we have been going over their offense for the last five days."

Playing for the first time in six days, the Wizards started a bit slowly and trailed 18-16 after one period. They warmed up in the second quarter, when rookie Randell Jackson scored 10 of his 12 points to help them to a 51-45 halftime lead.
