Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Antonio Davis came off the bench and scored 16 points, making three of four crucial free throws down the stretch, as the Indiana Pacers continued their dominance of the Philadelphia 76ers with a 99-95 victory.

Reggie Miller overcame a poor shooting night with 15 points and Chris Mullin added 14 as the Pacers defeated Philadelphia for the 14th time in the last 15 meetings. Coming off Tuesday's 89-78 loss to Miami, Indiana got a huge effort from its bench, which outscored Philadelphia's reserves, 47-12.

"It was a good game to win, although we did not play well," said Mullin. "In order to get back to where we were last year, we must work harder and longer to achieve this goal."

"We're just not playing well," added Pacers coach Larry Bird. "We are not doing good things out there. When Rik (Smits) does not play well, that puts pressure on Antonio to come in and play well. Fortunately, he did tonight."

Allen Iverson continued his torrid scoring with 33 points and Matt Geiger added a season-high 22 for the 76ers, who have lost three of their last four games following a 3-0 start.

"We've played all good games," said 76ers coach Larry Brown. "Playing against the Davises isn't easy. I'm pleased with our effort. I don't think many benches could compare to them."

"Indiana just executed well at the end of the game," added Iverson. "They made good baskets and good shots in that stretch run in the fourth quarter."

Indiana led 72-70 with 10 minutes left before going on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes. The lead was 91-84 with 1:44 to go but Philadelphia got five straight points from Iverson to pull within 92-89 with 18.2 seconds remaining.

Davis, a 69 percent free throw shotter last year, made 1-of-2 foul shots. George Lynch countered with a baseline jumper with 15.4 seconds to go that got the 76ers within 93-91.

Mark Jackson made two free throws but Iverson countered with one. Davis grabbed the rebound of Iverson's miss, was fouled and made both free throws for a 97-92 cushion with 5.9 seconds left.

Iverson scored 10 points in the first quarter, when Philadelphia made 12-of-24 shots and opened a 24-20 lead. The 76ers led 40-33 with just under five minutes left before halftime but the Pacers closed the second period with a 14-6 burst to draw within a point.

Iverson has led the 76ers in scoring in six of their seven games, averaging just over 30 points in his last five. Philadelphia started the season with a win in Charlotte before a 3-2 homestand.
