Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Mitch Richmond scored a season-high 31 points and backcourt mate Rod Strickland added 23 and 14 assists as the Washington Wizards snapped a three-game losing streak with a 95-88 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Richmond was 11-of-18 from the field and 8-of-13 from the line, helping the Wizards record their second victory over Toronto this season. He scored 26 points in a 98-97 home win on February 6.

"There are things Rod and I have to work out, but we play well together," Richmond said. "I'm used to the West Coast style of run-and-shoot. I have to get prepared for the halfcourt game."

Strickland made 15-of-16 free throws and notched his third double-double as the Wizards earned their first win in five road games this year and just their second victory in six visits to Toronto. He missed his only foul shot with 36 seconds remaining, falling one shy of a career high for free throws in a game.

"The backcourt came through, but we need to be more consistent as a team," Strickland. "Two or three players aren't enough."

Washington also avoided its first 1-5 start since the 1992-93 season.

Kevin Willis had 25 points and 14 rebounds for the Raptors, who have dropped five straight since a season-opening victory at Boston.

Richmond and Strickland combined for 54 points, compared to 23 for Toronto's starting backcourt of Doug Christie and Alvin Williams. The Wizards also turned 20 turnovers into 24 points.

"Our guys hung in real well," Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We took good shots, great shots down the stretch. Mitch Richmond is a threat, you have to respect him. We took the ball to the basket and that got us to the free throw line."

The Wizards shot only 40 percent from the field (29-of-73), but overcame their poor shooting by making 35-of-48 from the line. Richmond and Strickland were a combined 23-of-29.

"It takes time to develop something between Rod and Mitch," Bickerstaff added. "They're making progress. They make the game easier for our big guys."

Willis, who was fined $5,000 for throwing a flagrant elbow at New York's Charlie Ward on Tuesday, scored 11 points in the first quarter as Toronto grabbed a 26-21 lead. But the Raptors shot only 17 percent in the second period and were outscored, 27-17, falling behind at halftime, 48-43.

"Our team wasn't shooting well," Willis said. "Our momentum was going early, but we need to carry that until the third and fourth period. It could be mental fatigue. Our shot selection needs to be better. We need to get the ball in to the hands of the shooters."

After Toronto pulled within 64-60 on Tracy McGrady's layup with 2:52 left in the third quarter, Richmond answered with a 3-pointer. John Wallace hit a side jumper for the Raptors, but Washington reeled off five straight points and went up 72-62 on two free throws by Stickland with 40 seconds left in the period.

The Wizards took their biggest lead, 80-68, on Otis Thorpe's layup with 9:30 remaining before the Raptors ripped off a 9-2 spurt. They closed within 82-77 on Christie's jumper with 6:15 left.

But Washington put away the game with an 8-2 burst, opening a 90-79 cushion on Richmond's finger roll with 2:29 to play.

Christie scored 16 points and rookie Vince Carter added 15 for the Raptors, who dropped to 0-2 at home. Carter scored five points for Toronto in the final two minutes, but missed three crucial foul shots.

"We tried to keep them on the run because they played last night, but obviously that didn't matter," Carter said. "We just need to make shots. We have to concentrate and play hard. I was trying to get the team generated and it just didn't happen for us tonight."
