Game Story

INGLEWOOD, California (Ticker) -- With Dennis Rodman looking on, the Los Angeles Lakers put on the type of show that just may lure the controversial power forward back into the game in search of his fourth straight NBA title.

Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Derek Harper scored 18 points off the bench as the Lakers used a 13-0 third-quarter run to post their third straight win, 106-94 over the San Antonio Spurs.

Kobe Bryant had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who had a surprise visitor to the Forum in the form of Rodman, who reportedly is negotiating a potential one-year deal with Los Angeles. Rodman refused to indicate afterwards whether a deal was imminent but did say he would reach a decision by Monday.

"We hadn't really had the opportunity to think about what's going on with (the Rodman) situation," said Harper. "He's not a Laker yet, but it's something you can't allow to be a distraction for you. You have to have focus to play this game."

Tim Duncan scored 26 points and Sean Elliot continued his resurgence with 20 for the Spurs, who have lost the last six meetings with the Lakers, dating to April 4, 1997.

San Antonio held a 52-45 lead just under a minute into the second half before the Lakers rallied. Eddie Jones, who scored 16 points, started the spurt with a 3-pointer before O'Neal slammed and Bryant buried an 18-footer to tie the game at 52-52.

"We were a little bit more aggressive in the second half," said Bryant. "We came out and really wanted to get into them. To be a little more physical and get in the open court. Derek hit some big shots. He knows how to turn it on. He reads the court very, very well and he was able to get to the bucket on a couple of big occasions to make the big shots."

Harper sandwiched a pair of free throws and a layup around a six-foot hook shot by O'Neal as Los Angeles took a 58-52 lead with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter.

"We needed a lift," added Harper. "I just came in and gave the team a spark and fortunately it worked out for us."

Duncan made a pair from the line to pull the Spurs within 71-70 with just over a minute to go in the period, but Harper answered with a 17-footer to make it 73-70 with 43 seconds left.

David Robinson was limited to 26 minutes due to foul trouble, resulting in a lackluster night with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting.

"We're not losing because of our defense," said Robinson. "We're losing because of the little things. I made two dumb fouls just by reaching and that hurt us. I can't sit out the game, that was bad."

San Antonio shot 41 percent (32-of-78) from the field while the Lakers made 55 percent (42-of-76) of their shots. Los Angeles became the first team to score 100 points against San Antonio since March 25.

"We were the first to score 100 points (against them) this year," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "Against a team that has the best defense in the league the last two years, we had a great second half. They hurt us a little bit with the pick-and-roll the first half and scored zero points off the pick-and-roll in the second."

Los Angeles' starting point guard Derek Fisher was ineffective for most of the night, but nailed a 3-pointer from the right sideline with just over nine minutes remaining that opened an 82-73 cushion for the Lakers.

Lakers forward Robert Horry missed his fourth straight game due to an irregular heartbeat. Tests conducted on Thursday could not determine the exact cause of Horry's condition.

Elden Campbell and Corie Blount were ineffective at the power forward spot, combining for just one point and nine rebounds in 38 minutes, helping to further illustrate the need for one of the league's best rebounders in Rodman.

"I don't know if we need him," said Blount. "He definitely brings something to this game. Him being the type of player he is, I think he's got the respect of the referees because he plays hard. They know the stuff he does and he does it well. If he joins us he'll definitely be a plus, not a negative."
