Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies played five overtimes in their last two games. Facing the Minnesota Timberwolves, they barely played one quarter.

Stephon Marbury collected 23 points and 10 assists to lead a balanced attack as the Timberwolves defeated the Grizzlies for the ninth straight time, 115-96.

Joe Smith scored 21 points and Sam Mitchell added 19 off the bench for Minnesota, which never trailed and led by as many as 26 points. The Wolves have won five of their last six games.

The Grizzlies split a pair of multi-overtime games Tuesday and Wednesday but were not helped by Thursday's off day. They surrendered 63 points in the first half and really never were in the game.

"We can't use being tired as an excuse," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We didn't execute on the offensive end of the floor. Our pick-and-roll defense was the worst all year. We were a step slow with everything all night long. I knew this would be a difficult team for us to beat."

The Wolves shot 54 percent (47-of-87) from the field and were so efficient that All-Star forward Kevin Garnett was their fourth scorer with 18 points. Minnesota also had 34 assists.

"Our offense functioned really, really well tonight," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We've had back-to-back games now with over 30 assists -- that's a lot of assists. Marbury had a good night with another double-double. But more importantly, there were times where our offense looked like a surgeon out there."

"I don't think we `expected' to win," said Marbury, who was coming off a career-high 40 points Wednesday against Houston. "We came out tonight and wanted to play aggressively, to continue what we have been doing."

A basket by Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who scored 21 points, pulled Vancouver into a 12-12 tie before Smith scored six points in an 11-2 burst. A 3-pointer by Anthony Peeler gave Minnesota a 23-14 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

"I felt that I was pressing too hard early on and not really taking the open shot that I had," Smith said. "I tried to force things and was not as patient as I would like. I was in a good rhythm tonight and getting good looks at the basket. Whenever I get a good look at the basket -- within 15 to 17 feet -- I have the confidence to knock that down, so I'm going to take that shot."

A layup by Abdur-Rahim cut the deficit to 37-31 with 6:48 left in the second quarter but Mitchell contributed five points to a 13-2 run. His three-point play made it 50-33 with 3:52 to go. The Wolves led 63-44 at halftime.

Marbury and Garnett scored six points each in the third quarter, which ended with Minnesota holding an 87-70 lead. Mitchell had six more points in a 15-6 spurt that opened the final period and a nine-foot runner by Marbury gave the Wolves their largest lead at 102-76 with 7:12 to play. Vancouver got no closer than 13 points thereafter.

Bobby Jackson had 10 points and seven assists off the bench for Minnesota, which made 18-of-23 free throws and blocked eight shots.

Sam Mack scored 19 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 47 percent (38-of-81).

Vancouver looked tired, as rookie guard Mike Bibby managed just four points in 29 minutes and center Bryant Reeves shot an airball on a fourth-quarter free throw.

"I put some of the blame on me for tonight's loss," Bibby said. "I came out soft and they were able to do what they wanted. I can't blame fatigue for the loss. We started slow and we couldn't get it going."
