Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Even a day off did not help the Boston Celtics recover from the longest game in franchise history.

Brian Grant scored 21 points to pace six players in double figures as the Portland Trail Blazers posted their third straight win, 106-86 over the weary Celtics.

Boston was playing just two days after recording a thrilling 131-129 triple-overtime victory in Vancouver. First round draft pick Paul Pierce scored 22 points for the Celtics, who fell to 2-3 on a six-game road trip that concludes Sunday in Washington.

Grant also collected 18 rebounds for his second straight double-double, helping the Trail Blazers win for the fifth time in six games. Isaiah Rider had 16 points and six rebounds and Damon Stoudamire netted 14 points while dishing out seven assists.

Portland led 78-66 entering the fourth quarter and put away the game with a quick 11-2 spurt. Grant's three-point play with 8:53 remaining pushed the advantage to 89-68.

Jimmy Jackson began the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws for the Blazers before Tony Battie connected on a 12-footer to bring the Celtics within 80-68. But Portland scored the next nine points to break it open.

Arvydas Sabonis started the spurt with a layup and added two free throws 23 seconds later. Grant hit two from the line to make it 86-68 and was fouled by Jackson while converting a layup on Portland's next possession. The ensuing free throw gave the Blazers a 21-point advantage with 8:53 remaining.

Portland maintained at least a 17-point lead thereafter and cruised to victory.

Sabonis had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Greg Anthony added 11 points off the bench and Walt Williams scored 10 for Portland, which shot 49 percent (35-of-71). The Blazers also made a season-high 32 free throws, going 32-of-38 from the foul line.

Portland built a 52-37 advantage on the boards to overcome 15 turnovers that were converted into 19 opints by the Celtics.

Battie netted 16 points in 26 minutes off the bench and Antoine Walker had 15 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Celtics, who shot 40 percent (38-of-94). The Celtics were just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc and attempted only 13 free throws, making seven.

A driving layup by Pierce brought the Celts within 44-39 with 4:40 left in the second quarter. But the Blazers scored eight straight points as Williams drove for a layup, Stoudamire hit an 18-footer and found Rider for a layup. Rider's tip with 3:03 left before halftime made it 52-39.

Greg Minor's 3-pointer with 2:08 left in the second quarter cut Portland's advantage to seven points, but Stoudamire and Rider drilled jumpers in the next minute as the Blazers took a 56-45 advantage into the locker room.

Boston point guard Kenny Anderson had nine points and seven assists against his former team.
