Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Rookie Jason Williams scored scored 20 of his season-high 25 points in the first half and Lawrence Funderburke had nine in a decisive second-quarter run as the Sacramento Kings defeated the Charlotte Hornets, 106-95.

Sacramento, which has won three straight after dropping two in a row, broke open a tight game with a 26-7 run early in the second period.

Funderburke finished with 16 points and former Hornet Vlade Divac had nine and 14 rebounds. Williams was 9-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range.

"I care about the crowd, but I'm not playing for them. I'm playing for my team," said Williams, who quickly has become a fan favorite. "I just felt it early on, so I kept shooting."

"Williams had a great night against us," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "He shot the ball extremely well. ... He plays with a lot of confidence."

J.R. Reid and David Wesley scored 21 points apiece for Charlotte, which has lost five straight games for the first time since November 14-22, 1995.

"I don't like our effort on the court and 'til that changes, we can't expect to beat anybody," said Hornets guard Bobby Phills. "They jumped on us early and sustained it."

Williams had 14 points in the first quarter as Sacramento took a 31-28 lead. Reid hit an 18-footer to draw Charlotte within a point 29 seconds into the second quarter but Vernon Maxwell buried a 16-footer to ignite the pivotal burst.

Chris Webber and Predrag Stojakovic made layups to push the lead to 37-30 before Reid countered with a five-footer with 9:30 left. Maxwell answered with a long 3-pointer and Webber found Stojakovic for a layup.

Charlotte called timeout and Phills hit a layup with 8:31 remaining to get the Hornets within 42-34. Funderburke converted a three-point play but Travis Williams sank a free throw for Charlotte. Funderburke and Divac added free throws to push the Kings' lead to 47-35.

Maxwell drained another long 3-pointer to extend the advantage to 15 and Funderburke scored three straight points. Wesley hit a runner with just under five minutes left to get the Hornets within 53-37 but Funderburke and Divac countered with layups to push the lead to 20 with 3:34 to go.

"I'm learning my role," Maxwell said. "At the start, I did not get in a few games, but they were just looking at some younger players. They know what I can do."

Charlotte attempted a comeback late in the third quarter, drawing within 80-73 on a layup by rookie Brad Miller with 1:46 to go. But the Kings answered with a 13-4 burst to seal the victory.

The Hornets missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts and committed 17 turnovers.

Sacramento made 10-of-22 3-pointers to offset 25 turnovers. The Kings also missed 8-of-20 free throws.

"Tonight was a real team effort and we got a win, and that is what is most important," said Webber, who finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. "It was ugly but it was good. We have to play better. Sometimes you get breaks and we got a break tonight and didn't really play that well."
